Strength Training question??

Hi Everyone!!!
I have been doing cardio on a regular basis for the past month and now I'm ready to incorporate some strength training... not sure where to start... my legs are pretty strong but I have never, ever had much upper body strength... I want to start slow but I'm not sure what excerses to do... I have access to free weights and weight machines at the gym...will pilates help? any suggetions?
