Hubby and I just got our Silver Sneakers cards and are wondering if it's worth joining some programs. We have a treadmill and weight bench at home that I (not so much hubby) use regularly so I'm not sure if I want to join a group thing. Also has anyone joined the online Silver Sneakers program and if so have you found it helpful? Thanks.

Hmmm, I'm guessing everyone on this forum is too young for Silver Sneakers.

LOL. It's a free membership to many YMCA's and other partner fitness studios for seniors whose insurance plan provides for it.

Hello, I am actually a SilverSneakers Instructor (after previously being a member). It is an AMAZING program. You can go onto www.silversneakers.com to find a location in your area that sponsors these programs. It has improved my balance, turned osteopenia around for me, and helped me to lose 42 lbs. I don't have to take medicine anymore and I am in perfect health. I did also change my way of eating along with working out!

I teach MSROM, Cardio Circuit, YogaStretch and CardioFit. I have listed the classes below so you can get an idea of what they are.

MSROM (Muscular Strength & Range of Motion) – This is the basic SilverSneakers® class. Have fun and move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement and activities for daily living. Hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, and a SilverSneakers® ball are used for resistance. A chair is used for seated and/or standing support.

SilverSneakers® Cardio Circuit – Combine fun with fitness to increase your cardiovascular and muscular endurance power with a standing circuit workout. Upper-body strength work with hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, and a SilverSneakers® ball is alternated with non-impact aerobic choreography. A chair is offered for support, stretching, and relaxation exercises.

SilverSneakers® CardioFit – Get Up and Go with an aerobics class for you – safe, heart-healthy and gentle on the joints. The workout includes easy-to-follow low-impact movement, and upper-body strength, abdominal conditioning, stretching and relaxation exercises designed to energize your active lifestyle.

SilverSneakers® YogaStretch - YogaStretch will move your whole body through a complete series of seated and standing yoga poses. Chair support is offered to safely perform a variety of postures designed to increase flexibility, balance and range of movement. Restorative breathing exercises and final relaxation will promote stress reduction and mental clarity.

Sorry to make this so long, but I do hope that it has helped!

The nice thing about the SilverSneakers card is that it also give you the benefits of the gym. I do some working out at home (mostly putting together my choreography for my classes), but I prefer working out with people. It really helps motivation. A lot of my seniors come for the social aspects about as much as the workout. It really is a lot of fun!

I have participated in the past and enjoyed it. The classes I attended were come when and if you want. I need the motivation of group classes. I enjoyed the social aspect as well as the exercise part. And I especially appreciated the teachers who made sure we worked our entire bodies in a fun way. I would definitely join now if I could.

Low impact cardio. It's in the data base.
