Anything else like running?

The idea of running really appeals to me. The passion that I see other people have for running draws me in. The fact that you need nothing except yourself and your sneakers - I'm totally into that. However, every time I attempt a running program, I just hate it. It hurts my shins to the point that I cannot walk the next day, and rather than experiencing excitement at what my body can do, I count the seconds until I can stop. I stuck with C25K for 9 weeks, but in the end, the leg pain defeated my will.

I don't hate exercising in general - me and the elliptical are good friends. But I am looking for something more natural, more holistic, but not running. Any ideas?
