I was just wondering how alcohol affects dieting and weight loss goals etc. I'm not talking about drinking every night or about going out one night and downing 10 beers or anything, I know how the calories add up, but is it bad to have a beer with dinner once or twice a week?

I've read here that it could slow down your metabolism, but I have wine with dinner several nights a week and am still losing weight.

I'd stay away from those botique beers though as their loaded with calories. Micholob Ultra is very light and doesn't taste half bad.

I have heard that the weight loss after a night of drinking is because you actually dehydrate yourself from drinking all that alcohol. Go figure........drinking = dehydration ?? Weird.

It's a choice like any other.

Alcohol has a lot of calories and it metabolizes similar to a fat. Plus a lot of alcoholic drinks have a lot of carbs and/or sugar and some people are avoiding these.

The other thing that happens with alcohol is that it loosens your inhibitions and that cause some people to eat a lot more than they planned.

But if you want to drink it and you can fit into your plan, then why not?

There's a reason they call beer "Vitamin P(ee)".

    But it's just water weight.

I had posted this on another post a few weeks back. Hate to bring the bad news.....

It really has nothing to do with the amount of calories in beer but the type of calories and how it's metabolized. There are 7 calories per gram in alcohol, 9 grams per calorie in fat. So it's very close. Also, alcohol is a depressant which will have an effect on the physical body, not just mental.
When alcohol has to metabolize through your liver, it's cuts down the fat burning process up to 73%. I won't go into too much technical mumbo jumbo on the liver and fat enzymes.

This is just the short answer. There are a ton of articles on the web about the effects of alcohol on the metabolism. I hope some of this helps. Unless it's a special occasion, I would steer clear of the stuff. It can make or break you.

I was kinda wondering the same thing since my 21st birthday is in 6 months. obviously not too worried about it since I have quite some time until then... but I'll still be trying to lose weight at that time... I doubt I'll be a big drinker though lol. just want to be able to celebrate my birthday with 1-3 drinks.

I drink a glass of wine with dinner most nights.
I don't really go out drinking as much as I used to (mainly because I have a tendency to make my driver/taxi take a quick trip through taco bell at 3 am - gotta love fourth meal) but on occasion I still do it.

but having a drink with dinner a couple of nights a week isn't a big deal, just total it into your calories and you'll be fine!

actually beer is supposed to have the same heart benefits as red wine, if it's only 1 a few nights a week.

  • HI There ! I'm new here ! Not new to losing weight. I went from 276 lbs to 136 and felt great ! Of course I didn't drink wine back then. Now that I do, I've put back on 30 lbs and I LOVE MY WINE. I'm adding the calories into my food log and I'm working out, losing slowly, but i'm wondering what I would be doing if I drink the wine... Hmmmm... Why does all the good and fun stuff have to mess with our weight loss ;)
