I want to do Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred, which is an INTENSE 20 minute workout. However everytime i work out i vomit after getting a pounding headache. I'm perfectly hydrated so i know thats not the problem, and I eat something 2 hours before i work out. I had a CAT scan to rule out brain abnormalities and got the all-clear. Is it safe to work out or will i be just causing permanent damage?

  • I have nooo idea, but I'd maybe hold off an see a doctor? I hope it stops!
  • It doesn't seem to be. It always happens! I saw the doctor numerous times and he just prescribed painkillers and nasal spray. They don't even help kill the pain!! Thinking it could be something to do with my heart rate. Could be very wrong!!

Sometimes if people aren't used to doing high intensity exercise they can vomit afterwards (I'm basing this on watching episodes of "Dirty Sanchez" and "I used to be fat" on MTV), but I would check with your doctor.

Do you think it could be something to do with blood-pressure rising during exercise? See your doctor and ask outright if it could be.

See another doctor for a second opinon. That is not normal. Do you always eat or drink a certain food before working out?

That could be it actually - but the headaches are almost debilitating! Doubt thats normal. My doctor said it shouldnt do me any harm to work out but thats based on the CAT scan results. I'm scared now that it could be to do with my heart. Hopefully not!

Express these fears to your doctor and ask if s/he thinks a cardiology consult is warranted.
  • Thanks will definitely do that!
  • It always AMAZES me that people continue to seek medical advice in public forums.
No offense to you - but see a DOCTOR.

Everyone has opinions. Unless you're just surfing for the thought or idea that makes you most comfortable.

If that's the case, workout until you puke! Ignore your what your body is trying to tell you and push through the pain.

I think it is good that you have seeked a docter's advice and encourage you to go back if you are not satisfied or still worried.

I started a very intense cardio program and for the first 1-2 weeks I would get painful headaches after about 5 minutes. I would never throw up but once had to stay in bed rest of the evening. They seemed to be worse if I had less warm up time or if we went right into pushups or something where my head was same level as my heart right after warm up. I continued to work out through them and helped to take ibuprofin or tylenol before my workout. I went to have my blood pressure checked out too and it was fine. After 3 weeks or so I have never had one again. I think it was just too much too fast for me since I was sedintary before I began. It did scare me as I'm sure it does you but just wanted to share with you that mine did go away.

OP copy and paste the webpage address below into your browser, it may give you some pointers and then insist on a second opinion from a Doctor - you will see why when you see that webpage x

I'm only asking because people could have similar experiences. I've seen my doctor and he thinks I'm fine just 'cause they found nothing on the CAT scan. I'm nearly afraid to ask about my heart because i dont want any more tablets. I'm not going to ignore what my body's trying to tell me because i know somethings not right.

Lucky!! Its been happening me for almost 2 years now - but maybe the fact i'm so unfit contributes to it! I actually might try taking ibuprofen before my workout, though i think its unsafe to take it too often! The warm up thing seems interesting- as i always go into intense workouts after the warmup... ahh i dunno!!!

What are you eating 2 hours before you workout?

The headache could be hypoglycemia. Did your doctor check your fasting blood sugars?

Try moving the pre-workout snack to just one hour before working out and make sure you're eating something that has plenty of carbs in it - like a granola bar or a banana. See if that helps.
