Ok so I've seen that eating 5-6 small meals a day will help and that strength training will help.. What else can I do? I am going in tomorrow to do the medabolic test to see where mine is. I've been at a stand still and the nutritionist is baffled on why I'm not losing either... my thyroid is fine and I've tried upping and lowerign my calories, I've shocked my body with doign diff exercises and still nothing! We will find out tomorrow what my metabolism is and go from there. I jsut need some ideas on what else I can do. Oh and I do drink green tea! and I've tried the lemon in water... lol.. I don't know what else to do!
Thanks!
Thanks!

I took the metabolic test today and it said I have a fast metabolism which means I've been starving myself eating 1500-1800 calories a day!!!! At a resting rate my body burns 1962 calories!! Where most peoples lowest is 1200 mine is 2000. My nutritionist was shocked!! For a 28 year old female that is extremely high!!
DO YOUR WEIGHT TRAINING!!! I believe this is why mine is so high!!0 -

Excellent, that also means you didn't lower it by underfeeding it.
Did they give you the estimate of your BMR based on the RMR reading?
And are your goals setup to not net under your BMR, to keep it high flying?
Very lucky.0 -

Sorry to be the barer of bad news, but eating 5-6 small meals a day will not boost your metabolism. Meal frequency does not increase your metabolism. In fact, what you eat has little to no impact on your metabolism. Your body weight and lean muscle mass has everything to do with your metabolism. If you're bigger, you have a higher metabolism, if you're smaller a lower metabolism. If you're more muscular, you have a higher metabolism. Strength training will help a little bit, and is definitely recommended (though I think the impact of strength training on your metabolism are a bit exaggerated by the fitness industry). . Outside of that, avoid huge deficits and too much cardio, try and do some strength training mixed in with interval training and just eat at your BMR.

Though the mere act of eating food does increase your metabolism for a bit, which is where the theory comes to eat more frequently. Thermogenesis, about 10% of your daily BMR total.
But it increases to deal with the quantity of food, whether eaten 4 times a day, or 8 times a day. So no real increase.
But, the inefficiency of dealing with protein digestion and conversion makes it a lot less efficient food, causing more thermogenesis for longer.
If anything, eating more frequently of foods that cause problems with your system may make it harder to stick to what you need to do.
Like if you get insulin spikes because of sensitivity to carbs, then you could be left feeling very hungry 6 times a day now, even though you just ate. More likely to splurge.
So it's touch to say a blanket statement that it would have absolutely no effect. Depending on someone's system, it can.
Of course, as you encourage, eat at your BMR, or just kill any positive effect if always eating under.
Nothing like losing 200 calories to lowered metabolism, and your diet gives you a whole extra 50 compared to other methods!0 -
Even though eating more frequently may not have much effect on your metabolism, if you have a slow metabolism eating 5-6 smaller meals may help (or at least having a small snack between your 3 main meals). I have an underactive thyroid and that is the reason I was given for eating 6 smaller meals - it's not to boost my metabolism or correct my thyroid problem, just that a slower metabolism often handles smaller frequent meals better.
See what the results of your test are and go from there. If you start making changes before you know the results you might find you are doing the wrong thing for you. I'm sure your nutritionist will be able to make recommendations based on your results.
I totally agree with exercising and definitely weights/strength training to boost your metabolism, although you need to make sure you get enough protein. If you do have a slow metabolism exercising several times a day can help. It doesn't have to be much, just 2 or 3 10 minute walks is enough in addition to your other more vigorous exercise. For example a 10 minute walk in the morning, gym/DVD in the afternoon, 10 min walk in the early evening, or just 3 walks on your rest days. Of course, if you are on your feet moving around all day anyway you don't need to do those extra walks.
I hope your nutritionist is able to help once you get your results. Good luck :happy:0 -

Couldn't agree more. You hear lots of people say you need to eat all the time to keep it up, but I've also heard that your body doesn't start burning a meal until 3 hours after you eat it, so spreading your meals out means better burning. Not sure which is right, but I try not to eat plenty of protein to keep me full and not snack (unless it's something delicious and worth it, or I need protein after a workout). That way I can eat 3 good meals a day, without worrying too much about going over my calories.
I've also been loving strength and interval training. I read about some studies where people had better results from 3 half hour HIIT sessions a week than others doing 5 one hour sessions a week. They say the HIIT keeps you burning for longer after your session than regular cardio.
Might not work for everyone, but so far it's going well for me.0
