anyone know if it is a good way to "jumpstart" weight loss. I know it's not permanent (in fact it is only to be done 1 week at a time). Just wondering if anyone had it help them AND if you kept the weight off when you switched to counting calories (if you did that)???

I think you'd mostly just lose water weight. But I wouldn't mind doing the diet because I really like cabbage soup0

I honestly believe there are no healthy short cuts. If you eat nothing but cabbage soup for a week you wont have the energy to properly exercise. I've read that you're really only losing water and probably muscle anyway. Sure, it may work for some people for the short term, but has any fad diet ever been proven to be any good? If it were safe, easy, and effective nobody would have to ask.
Besides, do you have any idea the kind of gas that would cause!!! :noway:

unless it's your car I don't think jumpstarts are a good idea personally.
Healthy eating, exersize and time are what I've found works for me besides I can't imagine living off cabbage soup and i like cabbage0 -
Just like a fast it is a short term band aid for a much larger problem. You might lose weight but it isn't the right kind of weight. You lose more muscle and water on diets like this than the much needed fat loss.
Most people gain back the weight and then some on diets like this. This diet is one of many that promise great results but you can't eat cabbage soup forever. Just do it the right and healthy way, the results may be slower coming but when it comes to weight loss and eventual maintenance slow and steady wins everytime.

Cabbage soup might be a good "filler" if you find that you're not getting enough to eat... because it's virtually calorie free and certainly cabbage can't hurt you. But - to eat nothing but cabbage soup for a week? I'd be reaching for chocolate by day two.
Honestly, I'm in week 3 of eating well and working out and I've lost 15 pounds... that's an average of 5 pounds a week -how much more of a jumpstart do you want???0 -
The cabbage diet isn't eating nothing but cabbage for a week, hehe. It's called the cabbage soup diet because there is a cabbage soup recipe that you can have at any time during the plan and a supposedly unlimited amount.
The plan in itself isn't horrible. You are required to get rid of sugar, salt, caffiene, sodas, and cigarettes. You don't go hungry and the food themes are mostly whole foods.
Now, you can use it to "jump start" you way if you need to follow a really specific plan before counting calories. If you normally eat processed foods, fast foods, or junk, then sure this will clean that out of your system and you will likely lose quite a bit of weight, though mostly water unless you're exercising.
Just be sure to take a daily vitamin and listen to your body. Know that you probably wont lose the 10 pounds that the diet suggests. And yeah, if you have cabbage soup more than a few times a day, you'll end up gassy.0 -

Thanks for the input. I was considering it for 2 reasons:
1. It's not just the soup. One day it's soup and fruit. Another soup and veggies. Another soup and meat etc..
2. Working out RARELY happens for me. I have 3 month old twins and 3 other young children, so right now, it's very hard for me to work out. Maybe one day....0 -
Oh, if you can follow the entire plan, you'll have no problems counting calories. It will certainly jump start you into eating fruits and veggies which is a good thing. Have fun with it and find a really big variety of whatever food theme day you're having. That will keep it interesting, nutritious, and you might discover a few foods you didn't know you liked.0

It's a high-fiber, low-fat meal plan that gives you 7 different food themes over the week. Honestly, it wont hurt, especially if you plan to follow it up with a wholesome diet. Just be sure to follow it up with healthy eating instead of going back to your old routine of whatever you normally eat.0 -

Of all the genuine and successful weight loss stories I've ever heard, not one included fad diets and no exercise. Ask your husband for some support! Let him watch the kids for a couple of hours four or five times a week. Exercise is a GREAT stress reliever, and with five kids I'm sure you could use some stress relief on a regular basis.0 -

:drinker: And I'll drink to that! Great job and you are so right!!! It is about moderation and balance between healthy eating and exercise. And that is a life change we should all continue as long as we live. At least that's how I look at the whole "dieting" thing.0 -
The Cabbage soup diet is meant to hit the "reset" button of your digestive system--cleanse your system from toxins and processed foods. Though you may lose some weight during the week, the biggest benefit is it gets you to stop eating processed foods for a week and (hopefully) teaches you to eat whole foods instead. And you're totally right... this is not a long-term solution. If you return to poor eating habits, the weight will come back. It's not a miracle worker and it's not something you should do for more than a week at a time, but it's worth a try. Good luck!
P.S. This website might help you, too.
