Do the dew. NOT.

I used to drink mountain dew like it was going out of style. At work, at home...then when I first started this healthy kick (which is a lifestyle change from here on out) I decided to be "healthier" by drinking diet mountain dew. I would drink water maybe once every few days.

Since I joined this site a few weeks ago, I've been consistently drinking my water and only allowing myself diet drinks once or twice a week. I just went out shopping, and on my way home I realized I was parched. I craved water. I CRAVED WATER. I downed a whole bottle when I got back home. Seriously, if I can cut out soft drinks and not miss them, you guys can too.

I consider this a major breakthrough :D

What food or drink did you guys find yourself surprised to be craving?

I quit diet dew a couple weeks ago. I don't allow myself any, i am too afraid i will start all over again. I allow myself maybe a bit of diet coke or diet root beer here and there (one bottle can last me a week), but that is it.

I keep a water bottle full at all times and it goes everywhere with me.
  • I was surprised when I started craving water, as well. That was years ago, when I first started consuming water in earnest. Soda was the thing I had a hard time letting go of, but I realized it was not the "cola" I craved, just the bubbles. So I keep sparkling water on hand, and whenever I get a carbonation craving, I have that, sometimes with a splash of lemon or lime juice. Craving gone.

I was a Mountain Dew addict. Totally. I used to drink at least a 20 oz bottle a day, sometimes 2 or 3. Horrifying, when I reflect on it!

Want to know how many I've had since starting here? One can. In two weeks. If I can do it, anyone can! I am really, really surprised that I don't crave it at all, given how much I wanted it before. There was one night where I was really jonesing for a MD and I had it, only to find it meh, just okay. I'd rather drink water, and as long as there is a bottle around, I do! I now bring a refillable bottle of water to work, and I've had a can of Dew in my work fridge waiting for me for over a week. Inconceivable if you'd asked me three weeks ago!

Part of what helps is knowing I can have it if I'm willing to spend the calories on it. It's not forbidden fruit, it's just a high calorie treat now that isn't really all that satisfying.
