Was that a compliment?

I can always tell when people are sincere when they compliment me. Like, sometimes someone will say something only because someone else said something first (example: one friend says, "omg, you look great!!" other friend, in a monotone voice: "you look nice.")

Or sometimes someone will compliment me to make themselves look better. Like: "you look good. how much do you weigh now?" me: "x number of pounds" her: "oh, I remember when I weighed that much. But I looked fat..."

Here's one a former supervisor told me: "you lost weight huh? cool. I think weight loss isn't for everyone though, like Star Jones? She looks hideous now."
