I need some motivation

I switched to maintenance in Sept last year, and was on 1500 cals a day at that. At Christmas I weighed in and had lost another 4 lbs, so upped my maintenance to 1600. Just weighed again today, and I am up 4 lbs! In 6 weeks! How can I have gained 4 lbs in 6 weeks eating 1600 cals a day?
Can someone explain how this is possible? How much muscle could I realistically have gained in that time? I eat 60-80g protein day and do circuits including weight training twice a week.

Thanks!
I've lost around 30 lbs, well, I had! Which isn't a lot compared to some but has made a huge difference to me. I haven't measured myself recently, though I do feel more muscular. I just can't see how I could have put on that much in that time, of either muscle or fat. I accept it's probably a combination of the two.0 -
You could have gained some muscle and part of it could be water weight! Has your sodium intake been high? I highly doubt your body gained that many lbs of fat in such a short amount of time unless you lost control and had weeks of binging!:)0

My salt intake probably has been higher than normal. I don't normally finds it makes a difference as I run a lot and sweat it out, but it could be that given the cold weather I haven't been sweating so much.0 -
You most likely retaining some water, it's impossible for you to gain 4lbs because of 100 calories, you metabolism can easily accommodate a slight increase in your maintenance calories like that.0

Muscle weighs more than fat. If you are weight training and building muscle, you could be burning some fat but adding muscle definition... which would easily add some pounds.0

i wouldn't wait 6 weeks to weigh myself. if you weigh weekly stuff can't sneak up on you so easily. however, it could be, coincidentally, water weight at this particular time0

I don't own scales, so I only weigh myself when we go to stay at my parents, which is about once a month. I don't want scales in the house, I would get obsessive. I'm more about the bigger picture, rather than week to week, which I think is a healthier maintenance attitude.0 -

It very much is! And kudos to you for understanding that, I wish more people did.0
