I had surgery about a month ago and I couldn't do any sort of exercise for about a week then I was able to start walking. During that time I just stayed at about 1200 calories. As long as you're in a deficit you should be okay.

Make sure you are giving your body the nutrients it needs to heal quickly and effectively. Don't withhold the building blocks it needs to repair muscle, skin, blood loss, fight infection, etc etc. I would advocate just making sure the calories you take in are high nutrient healthy foods, and please include yogurt of you're on an antibiotic.

My mom had a double mastectomy, and had no complications from the actual surgery but the antibiotics cleaned out her gut so much she got C.Diff, an infection that is life threatening if not treated. :-/ Go yogurt!

You really should ask your doctor, because recovery is a beast, and I'm sure 99% of us have never had whatever surgery you are looking to get.

In general, yes, if you are going to be less active, you should reduce calorie intake. However, we don't know what kind of nutrition you'll need or what kind of food you can hold down after the surgery, so you need to ask your surgeon what kind of food and how much you can expect to eat.

When I had my hip replacement several years ago DH got take-out for every meal for about a six weeks because he doesn't like to cook and I gained a lot of weight from the combination of no activity (except PT) and unhealthy food. I don't know how long you will out of commission but be careful of a lot of take-out.
