Upper body strength

My upper body strength SUCKS! Even when I was fit and working a physical job and in the best shape of my life, I could never dog a push up. I am starting with 'girl' push ups now, but I just bought a pull up bar. What is the best way to start working on pulls up? I know I won't be able to do any and that I will have to work up to it. Any suggestions?

Upper body has a more complex system of muscle movements than lower body. With your legs you can do squats and lunges and work both sides of your legs. With upper body you have to split it up. Push ups use very different muscles than pull ups. If you can't do a full pull up now, try using a lateral pulldown machine (if u have access to a gym) Pushups, if you use a machine or weights, try to push as much weight as possible with fewer reps. You need to build strength before endurance if you can't get a push up yet.
