Going to the gym, followed by a sedentary day... how bad is

I was reading some interesting things today at http://www.hussmanfitness.org/index.html, and the author mentioned in passing something about not being too sedentary after a workout. I couldn't find anything that elaborated on this. I'm working hard when I go to the gym, but the rest of the day is really pretty sweat-free and sedentary. Outside of housework, which doesn't get my heart rate up, I'm sedentary.
I'm not getting the weight loss results I expected... at all... and I can't get the math to work. Every way I add it up, I should be dropping some weight.
So that made me wonder... if I'm working out in the morning, and then sedentary the rest of the day, am I somehow negating some of my effort? Would I find I got much better results and boosted my metabolism if I went back to the gym in the evenings for a mini workout (15 to 20 min of cardio)?
I've been focusing on trying to do my whole workout at once because I was told that once I get my heart pumping, my metabolism is up and I should burn as much as I can at that time. Therefore I've been doing cardio and strength training back to back when I'm able... sometimes after I do the strength training I'm just wiped out, though, and I go back in the evenings to finish my cardio.
Thoughts from the experts?

i think it's ok if you relax a little after going to the gym. just do your normal routine after cooling down and resting. people with more active lifestyles burn more calories i think is the point this author is going for. some of us are just more sedentery in general. but any exercise is good.0
