I'm currently stuck at home recovering from having a large but benign tumour in my kidney embolised. At the moment I'm suppose to be slowly getting myself more active, and my doctor has encouraged exercise.

I've been doing a few bits here and there but I'm looking for inspiration. I usually do weights but am having issues with pain in my kidney so I've stopped this. I have broken my cross trainer beyond repair, I have ordered a new one but that won't come for another two weeks.

I tried to start up yoga again but this has proven to be too painful.

So at the moment I'm stuck with chairobics, which is okay but I want something else.

I'm looking for any suggestions of anything else I can do? I'm finding it all quite frustrating as I've been stuck in the house for a few months, although I did manage a walk out last week. When I ask my doctors they don't suggest anything although they said the cross trainer is fine to do.

I really want to avoid anything that will work the muscles around my kidneys. To give a clearer picture, first few weeks out of hospital I wasn't able to walk around by myself, go to the bathroom, shower. I've only been able to bend down and stretch up in the last few weeks, still can't bend for too long.

  • Sorry, i have read your post and this is of no help but its tough to find exercises that do not engage the core.

Do you think you can change the walk to a jog? i could devise you a circuit if you wish and you could chop and change as you like..?

I'm a bit stuck indoors at the moment, I'm okay when it snows but it's black ice out here at the moment, I can't risk falling over until I'm sure the tumour has shrunk. I do always have the stairs though.
  • Still black ice, in England? cleared up ages ago where i am.

I think light activity is the key, when doctors say exercise they really do mean the weekly recommended exercise of 3 sessions of 30 minutes each, minimum. This could be as simple as walking for 30 minutes which you probably do picking up your shopping from the supermarket.

My source for the 3x30 mins a week is by a well known nutritionist who is not a trainer but he does advocate 3 x 30 mins per week as a minimum and doctors tend to be the same.

    My ideas for workouts :

    1. go for a steady walk but include intervals, so say there is a street with lamposts... with every 3 lampost walk quicker to the next lampost and then go back to normal pace for the next three after.

    2. Stairs is a brilliant idea, but i would not do too many consecutive ones as they would take your wind away and hurt your kidney area. Say three consecutive up and downs then at the bottom do 15 squats. Take a minutes rest.

    Repeat 3 more times.

These are just ideas off the top of my head. If you want more, just give me a shout.
