Getting Real w/ myself

Hi Everyone!

I started using this site on Sunday, and I am already amazed by how honest it is keeping me . . . I have never been severely overweight, and as a Yoga instructor and a vegetarian I was always able to fool myself into thinking I was as fit as I could possibly be. But since turning 30 two years ago, my body has changed drastically and I have been battling the same 5-10 pounds without any real plan as to how to beat them for good . . .

I guess getting real with myself and admitted where the problems lie is the first start, and so I thought logging my calories and exercise activity would be a good start. I had no idea how enlightening it would be! I've always been a "healthy" eater, in that I eat a lot of veggies, salads, whole grains, nuts, fruits, drink milk at least 3 times a day . . . but I've realized this week that portion control and timing of my eating may be getting in my way. I was amazed on day one how quickly the foods I thought were great for me added up to my total calorie goal! I've already adopted some new habits this week that have brought me within my goal range -- not easy, but I feel better for it. The weekend will be a challenge, especially if I go out with friends for dinner/drinks.

My other realization is that while I enjoy my daily yoga practice, I do nothing on a regular basis to get my heart rate up . . . I am muscular and fit, but the extra "pudge" isn't going anywhere, and I know that my hatred for cardio is to blame. I don't know yet how I am going to overcome this, but I am up for the challenge!

Thanks for letting me share . . . I look forward to sharing ideas and experiences with all of you!

Oh I can certainly relate to that. Before 30, pounds melted off when my body said it had enough. Now it's making me work at it, bleh. I guess it got tired of working for me, hehe.

Except, I'm not muscular and fit. I'd love to be able to relate to that one! I'm quite the weakling but I'm starting to get stronger. I do power yoga for cardio ... my HRM says I'm working hard so it works for me.

Do you not like power yoga or is it just not enough for you?

Yeah, early on I realized that while Yoga and Isometrics are great to keep the muscle groups solid, they don't do a heck of a lot for your fat stores. I love resistance type exercise, but you gotta mix in cardio or else you're going to lose your balance (figuratively speaking).

Good job on the realization though, it usually takes people months to realize their faults fitness wise. I know for me, it took about 4 or 5 months.

    Best luck
