Baby Carrots

AOL User GEORGII1 Says:

"A neighbor lost her car and asked me to pick up a bag of baby carrots when I went to the store. This neighbor was really in financial crisis at the time and I mentioned that unless she was at some specialty store, I thought those were only cut to shape carrots and not real baby carrots. That was a good three weeks or even more ago, but yesterday she told me I was right and she'd be cutting her own carrots from now on."

No way! Well there's an easy way to save about a buck every trip to the grocery store. We go through bags of those things!

I have a debate with myself every time I go to the grocery store for produce. I know that can peel and chop the carrots for a much lower price than the "baby carrots". However, I also know that these are extremely handy when I am pressed for time. Additionally, my family and I are more likely to grab the baby carrots for a quick snack than we would be to peel and chop. Without the baby carrots, we all look for something else easy to grab and eat on the go...which might not be as healthy.

There are real baby carrots, but they don't usually look like the smooth ones people see.

They carry them at the Giant near my apartment.

Carrots always taste better when you cut them fresh too. The "baby" carrots are always so oxidized on the outside. I chop a bunch at a time and keep them in the fridge.

But I have to say that I will buy the baby carrots in a pinch, they are so convenient.

I have to admit that I used to buy the lunch size baby carrots for my kids when I worked at 3:30 am and was always tired.

Now I am lucky to work from home and once a week or so I buy a bag of carrots, peel them, cut them and portion them into snack size baggies and if you add a tiny bit of filtered water and get the air out the carrots stay nice and juicy and my son eats them like candy! Maybe that's because there isn't any candy in the house  n

BTW, I do the same with celery!

lol, they are cute, and I think they taste way better as well, I find them sweeter then the "normal" long carrots, I would buy them if they were 5 bucks a bag, seriously, they aren't the larger carrots cut smaller either, that's just not so. That's like saying a cherry tomatoe is the same as a large vine tomotoe just left on the vine longer, not true, it's a dif variety of carrot, we grow them on our property in the summer months, but gotta buy em in the winter ones, which is like 9 months outta the year. The kids will eat these much easier as well, which is always a good thing, nothing fun about a "stick" gotta please the young ones.

There is this resturaunt in CA called Caiote ... they serve real baby carrots as part of their veggie side, complete with the green part. They are really sweet.

I believe it was Gordon Ramsay that said don't spend your money on baby anything, it costs twice as much and when it comes down to it fresh veggies taste the same baby or big.
