What's wrong with having some beef? If you get a lean cut, it is a great food.
  • Nothing wrong with it, just wondered if it weird? I dont know if I'm missing something and I want to make the best choices. I usually crave sweets not meat..lol

I've been craving beef lately too, and it's weirding me out. I feel like it HAS to be a deficiency of some sort.... maybe we need more iron? (just throwing out ideas)

I'm not a big proponent that cravings mean you need something. If you're eating a good balance of foods and getting enough protein, fat, fiber, vitamins and minerals, you'll be fine. But if you crave something, have a little. We need balance in our lives.

DH craves red meat when he's iron deficient, but his regular diet is pretty lacking in the iron department. You might also just be craving the taste. I do, sometimes. But I like red meat.

I don't crave it, but I eat beef several times a week. I also eat plenty of chicken, pork, and been trying to up the fish. I say have a lean steak in a sensible portion and enjoy!

Maybe "craving" isn't the right word to use for me. I "crave" things like ice cream, chips, etc. because they taste good and make me happy (at least momentarily  )

This "craving" for beef is completely physical and not just a comfort/emotional/tastebuds kind of thing. I know it's my body and not my mind that wants it, if that makes sense.

So eat some. Our bodies can tell us a lot - if we actually listen. You probably need protein.

I'm not a big meat eater, but I also occasionally crave beef. I've always wondered if it's because I tend to be low on iron sometimes.

What's wrong with beef? I eat beef every day, I don't like poultry or fish (unless it's fried) and I seem to be doing fine.
  • Maybe I should have posted the question as..why did I have no desire to eat last couple days but today I want everything? Steak is just on my mind most.

When I am craving beef, I go for it. Filet Mignon, Flank Steak and Sirloin are pretty lean!

(That was me over the weekend. :D)
  • I really really crave a medium rare steak pretty often. Where my mouth will water thinking about it. Ha! :D I usually eat steak once a week :) Nothing wrong with that!

Are you close to that time of the month? Before i started eating better i had horrible red meat cravings a few days before or during. Could be an iron thing?

Mmmm....steak. I can't remember last time had a good steak dinner. This is a great reminder I need to take care of that soon! haha

And if your craving it...then eat it.

I don't even like red meat, but I find myself craving it sometimes. I have an iron deficiency, and I usually attribute it to that.

Weird fact: the desire to chew on ice also is a side effect of anemia.

No joke, I thought this said "Craving beer" at first, to which I thought me too!

But then I realized it said beef. While occasionally I'm really in the mood for a juicy steak (like this past weekend---so I ate one), I don't typically crave beef. But some lean beef tenderloin is perfectly ok to eat as you're craving it! Just like anything else, watch your portion size and enjoy :)

Eat some beef!! I crave protein a lot too when I work out. You probably need it. Just get leaner cuts/grades and it'll work. If you think you are iron deficient, eat a handful of raisins!

it sounds like your body is asking for protein? My body does that after my monthy. I use a protein powder during my monthy and after and it makes me feel better.

I have been told that it is a lack of iron. I don't know if that is totally correct, but if I crave beef I eat it.

I think that almost all cravings are the result of your body asking for a particular type of nutrient. In the cases of things like chocolate (often magnesium, I'm told) and sweets, your body may not be asking for the right way to get the nutrients, but it's asking for them. In the case of beef, it could be a lot of things but if you're craving it, eat some. I had a time about a year or a year and a half ago when I was craving cheese and peanut butter sandwiches. I had no idea why, I'd always thought it was gross before, but I ate them for lunch for about two weeks and never had the craving again. Then I realized that they shared many of the same amino acids, so maybe my body was just asking for those because I had seriously decreased my meat intake. If you want the beef, have the beef. You're never, ever trying to outsmart your body. You're trying to work with it.

A lot of people I know say that. I think it's possible that is true occasionally, but not usually. It would not explain cravings for things like beer, Cheetos, cake, etc. If we were craving nutirtion it makes more sense that we'd only crave healthy foods.

I think those are more likely a symptom of dependency, or habit, rather than need.
