I am starting on this website.. I have been trying to lose weight for many years.. I finally went to a nutrtionist/weight loss clinic. He gave me this website and said it was "great!" So, I am determined to lose about 60 pounds... My metabolism is like sludge... SLUDGE...
I have been ill with pneumonia, sinustius, you name it, I have had it. So, I had to stop exercising for about 3 months.. Now I am starting back up and really trying to take it one day at a time and not expect these 60 pounds to be gone in a week..:)
Anyone have some encouraging stories? I am 50 years old and I know it is never too late to get healthy... I just get overwhelmed and tired of the trying..
Thanks... :)

Welcome to MFP, and good luck to you!

Be honest, log everything, eat your exercise calories, and you will go far! :flowerforyou:
  • Welcome! This is the best place to do it! Lots of help and encouragement here! :flowerforyou: You can do it. I'm 55 years old and I have Menier's Syndrome (severe vertigo, weakness, tinitus) which hits me without warning and I have to work myself back up in strength afterwards, but it is possible! I've lost 15 lbs since January! I have 66 lbs to go and I'm not giving up! You can do it, too!
The trick is to count those calories, watch your portion sizes, eat several small meals instead of 3 large ones, learn to love your veggies and keep exercising so that you burn more calories than you eat. This site is fantastic for that! They do all the math part for you. It really helps you stay on track. Just don't let yourself give up! You deserve a healthier you! Good Luck on your goals!:drinker:

dmbelt- Congratulations on your decision to not wait any longer! You're right, it's NEVER too late to get started.
Let me introduce myself. My name is Craig, I'm 44 years old, a father of 4. I started working out/exercising a year ago after having had enough of what my life had given me. I used to be a residential building contractor, on the move, heavy lifting, that sort of thing. That was until November 2003. While at one of my job sites, I pulled a muscle in my back. Unknown to me at the time, I had no discs at the bottom 4 vertebrae. My spine collapsed. I personally have never experienced child birth, but if it is anything close to the pain I had, my heart goes out to women everywhere! I had spinal reconstruction surgery in early 2004. ( the insurance compnay had to make sure it was "bad") The nerve damage was already done, and the pain continued. I went through Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, this treatment, that treatment. Finally, the 3 Doctors "charged" with my care gave me the news no on EVER wants to hear. "This is your life", they could dull the pain with narcotics, but "don't do this, don't do that, and especially, no lifting over 20#!" That one was especially painful because I had an 18 month old daughter at the time. Fast forward over the next 4 years. Enter 45 pounds that hadn't been there. Continue with even MORE pain. Last March, I'd FINALLY had enough!
I was tired of hurting, I was tired of feeling like I did, looking like I did, and decided that I was going to "try" and do something about it. If not, I assumed, I would be dead by 50! My wife and I started working out together. I started slowly, with light weights. Got winded, but refused to give up! Then something strange started happening, I started feeling better, I lost a few pounds, kept feeling better, lost a bit more weight. Since that day last year that I took the first step on my journey, those 45# are GONE! The narcotic pain meds are GONE! And I feel better than I have in a long time.
I am VERY happy for you, and excited at the same time. I truly believe that if I can do it! Anybody can!

    Best,

    Craig
