Guidelines on exercise while sick

So, I'm a teacher and tend to catch whatever the latest illness is that is running through my classroom. It usually isn't too bad, a head cold or something. I don't want this to effect the progress I am making. I have been really focused and before joining MFP I lost 10 lbs. Now I am motivated to keep going, but what do you do if you are sick? Obviously, if I can't get out of bed or am having gastrointestinal problems (to put it nicely), going to the gym is out. What about head colds? Right now I have a dry cough which sometimes makes heavy cardio difficult. I don't want to skip a workout, but I also don't want to prolong whatever it is I have. Any tips?

  • The rule of thumb I have heard, and it works for me, is: if the cold is above the neck, it is OK to exercise in moderation. I wouldn't do intervals or long distance that would tax the immune system.

As stated, generally if the symptoms are above the neck, you are good to go for exercise. If they are below the neck, rest.
