  • My Fitness Pal should tell you how many calories you need. Have you not gone through the process of setting up your goals here?

It seems about right, you'll lose weight there, you should.

I like to use the numbers on the weight loss calculator from freedieting.com----it's very ad based so just use the calculators.

You've got to let MFP decide for you. How many pounds per week are you looking to lose? I'm close in age, have a lightly active job, and weigh 218. MFP allows me 1230 calories/day. 1600 would be to maintain my current weight. Yours may be different based on height (I'm only 5'1). But if you answer all the questions accurately, MFP will give you your total :)

That sounds about right and as above said (sorry i suck at remembering names!! D:) MFP will tell you how many calories you can eat... and this is before you add exercise in.. I myself don't eat my exercise calories because i have about 1700 cals to play around with!

You'll lose more if you do some exercise
  • Yep sounds totally right. That's exactly the same as mine. I go to the gym 4 times a week to earn more. Good luck xx

Let MFP decide but you didn't say how much you want to lose or how quickly or what exercise you are doing. Seems high for someone that has 100lbs+ to lose.
  • i filled in my info but it just asked me to add my calories in so i chose this amount myself. Can you tell me how to let MFP do it for me??? is there somewhere on the website where i can check my details?? x
  • i've found it and it says 1370 per day net calories. i think ill be ok with that tbh. Do you have to eat your exercise calories you earn??????

If you go to the My Home tab, then click Goals, it should walk you through your height & weight, plus how much you want to lose - from 1 lb a wk to 2 lbs a wk or whatever & how many times per wk you plan to exercise & for how long. Then it will give you a calorie recommendation.

Some ppl say you definitely should to make sure your body is getting enough fuel, others say they don't & it works for them. I was set at 1200 calories & wasn't eating my exercise calories back or even eating all my calories some days & I stopped losing weight. I set my goal to lose 1 lb per wk & now I have 1400 calories instead of 1200, so I am going to try that plus eating most of my exercise calories back & see if it helps. I think I lost weight at first because the lower calorie intake was a shock to my system, but with the exercise, my body needed more fuel, which caused me to stall. This thread helped me -

Also, MFP takes into consideration your daily activity level & whether you have a desk job or whether you're active, etc. & sets you at the right limit based on that, assuming you are going to eat your exercise calories back. That is why it is such a touchy subject because MFP is set up to have you eat them back, but some ppl don't.
  • THANKS EVER SO MUCH FOR ALL YOUR HELP AND SUPPORT! can you tell me how you got your weight loss bar at the bottom of your post xx

If you want to maintain your metabolism and your muscle mass, then yes you should eat your exercise calories. if you use MFP to estimate your exercise calories, then eat 50-75% of them as the estimates can be high.

I'm 5"7 and 245lbs and have a desk job and my calorie intake goal is 1300 per day in order to lose about 2lbs a week. I try not to eat all my exercise calories each day but if my food intake goes over the 1300 cal mark I find some comfort knowing I have the exercise calories to fall back on.

Ashleynicol3, will have a read of that thread - thanks
