I adjusted my MFP protein goal based on Stroutman81's great article (http://body-improvements.com/resources/eat/).

He suggests 1g of protein for each lb of GOAL weight per day. Which in my case would be 165g of protein per day.

This is way higher than what mfp originally had me set at and despite eating eggs, veggies and lean meat with most meals I'm having a hard time getting anywhere near it.

So a couple of questions. Firstly, is 165g a day too high? Second, if I should be getting 165g per day, would using a protein powder supplement be a good way to get there? I took a look at a few powders but many of them have high carb amounts and as a type 2 diabetic I can't be supping 33g of carbs in a single shake. Any recs?

Thanks!

If you're a diabetic, don't use protein powder.
We never know what these scammers are putting in those jugs.
Seriously, just go with lean meats.

As for 165gm, that's a bit high according to "conventional wisdom", but isn't it that very wisdom that got our nation so fat?
    Maybe...
I try to get about 30% protein.

    Hey CG.

Yes I believe MFP underestimates protein. Certainly I take protein as a target not a limit (while I limite Fat/Carbs). I am also low carb.

Went out yesterday for some protein powder and having canvassed those available. I was looking for low carb too as alot are way too high on carbs or cals. The best value for most protein but less cals/carbs I found was "Precision Engineered - Whey Protein" to be the best. 2 scoops gives you 188 cals, 3 carbs, 4 fats and a decent 35 protein.

You can get bigger protein hits out there but few with such low cal and carb.

    Hope that helps.

I use nut butters, tofu, edamame, etc. to get more protein. Ask a vegan! They know ALL the sources. Quinoa and beans have a good amount of protein too. I also eat protein bars sometimes if they're all natural and whatnot, but they are sort of a last resort because of the high sugar and carb content. Is there any way you could ask your doctor?

Protein powder seems sketchy to me... I have always been a big proponent of getting everything from food, but then there are tons of body builders and much more fit people than me who have shakes and powders all over their diary. Makes me wonder if there's something to it?

If anyone would care to educate me, I'd really appreciate it!

There are protein powders with 6g or less per serving of carbs and off 24g or protein. Taking in 3 of those a day will help. I personally supplement with ON 100% GOLD STANDARD WHEY which only has 3g of carbs per serving.

Body Fortress - whey protein from walmart has 4g total carbohydrates and only 2g of sugar per spoon with 26g of protein -- I like putting the chocolate flavor in my morning coffee it tastes delish :)

I get about that much protein a day and I drink a shake maybe twice a month and it's usually to get my calories up after a big burn day. I'll make my diary public and you can check it out if you want. I eat lean meats, fish, beans, lentils, eggs, quinoa, etc.

Or consider cottage cheese, tempeh, Greek yogurt, almonds and almond butter, eggs, quinoa...
