BMR Calculations

Question for all you BMR experts.

Today I was curious about BMR calculations, so looked at quite a few different sites.

Most of them them threw out the same figure, give or take 10 cals, of 1510, which would put my sedentary TDEE at about 1800.

I am 44,
5ft 0
and 179 lbs

MFP has my TDEE at 1730 and has set my "llb per week" calorie goal as 1230.

I increased it to 1400 as I thought 1200 was too low, appreciating that the loss would be slower.

However, what is concerning me is that both the 1400, and the 1200 is below the BMR of 1510, and all the warnings on here are about making sure you never drop below your BMR.

Should I increase my calories to 1500?

I am certainly no "expert" but I don't think it makes any sense to go below what your body needs to function its organs etc (what it would need if you were in a coma and in bed all day). I was orginally at 1200 also, but bumped mine up to 1450 which is an average of what numerous sites have told me what my BMR is. Your body needs a certain amount of fuel to function and then uses more when you are actually up and moving. Just my humble opinion.

Mine"s around 1500 - I do the "spike" thing where I eat 1500 net on three days of the week, 1200 net for three days, and 3000 for one lovely pig-out day - My TDEE is 2200....

    So 2200 x 7 = 15 400 per week, and I eat 11 100 per week, which still leaves me with a deficit of 4300 - 1.2lbs a week loss....

Ok, I think I will give it a go, for a week, and see what happens.

Nothing to lose, only weight :)

I'm kinda new to this and should have done a bit more research. I've been exercising since week before Christmas and counting calories for ~month. I've lost 8 pounds but have been stalled for a week or two. I be been trying to eat at 1200 and recently realized I should be eating my excercise calories too. I'm going to try to up my calories to 1500 and see if that'll get things going.

You'll have to find out what works best for you. My BMR is just under 1,700 and I have switched my goals here to reflect that. MFP gave me 1,300 which was far too low for me (and I think most of the average people in the world). Personally I find I lose better at my BMR and would suggest eating at that for a few weeks.

One week wouldn't be enough time to see how it will help/hurt your weight loss.
