Strength training without the gym

Hi
I am looking to do some strength training to build a little muscle. I can't afford a gym membership so I would have to do this at home. I don't have much space or equipment at the moment but I am prepared to buy some small equipment such a weights. I have just started the 100 pushups, 200 situps and 200 squats programmes and I also do karate and a fair bit of walking so my cardio is pretty much sorted.
Can anyone please advise on a suitable programme that I can do at home with only free weights? Also what sort of weight should I be looking to lift given that I am a reasonably fit almost-40-yr-old lady? I don't want to be going out buying weights that are too light to be useful.
Any help is greatly appreciated
