Machines control your movements, and only allow you to move in specified paths of motion. If you're new to lifting, it's probably better to start with a machine.
If you're more experienced, free weights are better. Because now you have to control the motion 100%. I find this to be more effective for shaping muscle, plus all the support muscles get more of a workout too.

Thanks. That's what I had kind of thought. I'm brand new to this.

free weights are better in every way except initial ease of use.

you use helper muscles... you burn more.. you get a better workout, and its harder to work one muscle without working its opposite muscle... (and therefore avoids an imbalance that can cause injury)

the downside is... if you're new and have no plan or guide, you look at the intimidating pile of iron, and go home..... theres not much of a learning curve, but its intimidating.

Free weights typically challenge you more and force you to engage your muscles more because the lack of assistance from the machines.

The biggest benefit from machines imo is it's easier to control your posture and there's less danger if you "fail" that doesnt mean you cant get hurt or do it incorrectly at all just that it helps lessen those risks.
