Any heel pain sufferers out there?

I have been trying to walk 30 minutes a few days a week, but my heels hurt afterwards (and the next day). I talked to a guy at a fitness store and he evaluated my situation (I know, he's not a medical professional) and suggested I have plantar fasciitis and need shoes with moderate stability arch support.
I bought some new Saucony shoes and wore them around the house for a few days before taking them out for a walk this afternoon. I'm wondering how long it should take before my feet get used to the extra support in the shoes and I start to feel better.
If it helps, I'm only 10 pounds overweight, but middle aged, and had arch problems as a kid. Oh, and I pretty much live in cowboy boots, so I'm sure that hasn't helped over the years.
