Am I right in thinking that if I went for a jog every morning and then did 100 sit ups, I'd get a flat belly? As well as dieting of course.

Its a good start. I highly recommend pilates for the stomach. I was recently told I looked like I had the waist and and stomach of an 18 yr old, I am 43. Winsor Pilates is my key.
  • I second pilates. It is all I can do (health reasons), but I am thrilled at what it has done to my abs, even without doing any cardio.
  • More or less. Crunches/ab workouts alone don't make your abs visible. It's the cardio that makes a difference. The ab workouts just help you get that 6 pack :)

    Exactly.

I'd focus hard core on cardio first. You might have a glorious 6 pack, but if it's covered by fat, no one's ever going to see them. Burn the fat off, then shape them up.

I actually recommend push-ups for shaping/defining muscle in your abs. It's mobile (and therefore more challenging) planks which really engage your core.

I do 30 minutes of cardio followed up with crunches and verse crunches, lunges and beicep curles 5# repeat 3 times

1 leg bent and crunches, other leg, squat, press with #5 repeat 3 times.

I have lost 2" all over.

I have recently started doing planks. Awesome workout for the core.

Abs are made in the kitchen not the gym, you can do crucnhes till your blue in the face, you CANNOT spot reduce, as for cardio, doing to much duration can and will cause you to go catabolic, meaning your body feeds on your lean muscle for fuel as an energy source, as a trainer i tell clients not do exceed 20-30mins @ 65% HRMAX, look at any long distance runner beside an olympic sprinter, one is for endurance and the other is strenght and power, 2 totally different body compositions-Ty

You do not have to do a million crunches to get defined abs. Everyone has abs, most of us just have fat covering them. So yes, continue eating at a calorie deficit. I'd also recommend adding weight training to your program including big lifts like squats and deadlifts. It helps preserve muscle as you lose fat. Cardio and calorie deficit = weight loss. Weight training = looking good naked.
