OMG I just purchased a polar HRM and today compared it to my treadmill--- polar said I burnt 350 calories and my treadmill said 700... I have been going by my treadmill ffor calories. I go for 60-65 minutes and 4 miles so I have been really working hard I thought... anyway just to let you know the difference

I do about 3.6 MPH for 35 minutes...and that is burns 350 on my Polar - but I weigh 200 - that makes the calorie burn higher....yours sounds about right. Unless you keep your hand on the treadmill the entire time to record your heart rate it won't know how much you really are working - it would only be guestimating - that's the beauty of an hrm.0

LOL, i was the same way when i got mine, i do an hour on my treadmill and about 5 miles, just about to go hop on it now in fact.
I'm glad i never eat my exercise calories just in case!! Since i don't always wear my HRM, it bugs me. I wuld never have lsot anything if i ate them going by it!!0 -
I found out the machines at the gym only go by my weight and then the duration of the exercise. They don't even use the level I've got the machine set at! So I was increasing my levels but the machines said I was burning less because my weight was going down and my duration was the same.
I was quite surprised at how different my HRM was from the machines though. I burn less calories on the stationary bike than the machine says but more on the treadmill when I run. When I run, my HR gets up pretty high, but I have trouble getting it to go up on the stationary bike. When I ride my real bike for the same amount of time, I burn 200 calories more!0 -

that sounds about right. Same for me. Believe it or not, balance plays a pretty big roll in that for you. That, and the fact that, on a stationary bike, unless you're leaning forward the whole time, standing up, you're not using your arms, where as on a real bike, you always are to one degree or another.0 -

How fast do you walk? My HRM says that I burn about 313 calories doing a walk/jog combo in 30 mins.0 -
It was the opposite for me, which explained why I was feeling so lousy, tired, and was cold all the time. The machines - elliptical and treadmill, for walking and wogging - were nearly 1/2 the cals my HRM said. So I wasn't eating enough. Now that I have my HRM I'm using those cals and feeling much better, and the weight is dropping again. But then, I'm well over 200 pounds... it seems that those machines aren't right for anyone, if you're big, the number is too small, if you're smaller and fit, the numbers are too high... so what's the point?0
