What's a tampon bar??
The pad that you can put around the bar.0 -
I LOVE this!!0
-
Why would you not want to use the pad for the bar? Are you supposed to look cooler without it? I'd rather not have red marks all over the back of my neck.0
-
I hate Squats! Everything about them. I need to love them to though lol0
-
Well, it's a good thing I love squats!0
-
I squats. I also legpresses.0

it "can" promote bad form. Also, maybe somebody can correct me, but if your getting red marks on your neck, your holding the bar too high??? When I squat, the bar sits below the top of my shoulders.0 -
The "***** pad" is frowned upon because of what it does with bar positioning and balance. It's much better to start very light and get adjusted to the weight without a pad. Eventually you'll develop your traps enough to form a 'shelf' for the bar to rest.0

From my understanding the bar will sit different with the pad, so the weight/force will shift and could cause stress on the lumbar spine.
Also can cause it to be less stable with more chance of slipping and even moving the center of gravity.
Building traps and muscles in your back should prevent any pain from the bar. No reason to use it. Wear a t shirt IMO.0 -
I use the pad...interesting input, I'd never heard it was a bad thing. What about those plastic stingray-looking things you can snap on to the bar, are those bad too?
P.S. squats are my boyfriend0 -

That's interesting. I don't use a pad that looks like a tampon - it's a rubber thingy. I don't actually get red marks, because I have never done it without the pad - just assumed that's what would happen. I believe my form is correct - at least that's what the trainer at the gym has told me and I do squat pretty heavy, without any pain in my back.0
-
yeah, the pad was encouraged on me by several of my friends because the bar left marks on me and they said it is bad for the bones. Whatever. I think it works the same.0
-
LOL! Cant wait to drop that name for it at the gym tonight!0
-
squats, that is all0

i squat days. low, deep and heavy. take a big breath and squat and push knees out and look up and focus. my whole lower half hurts like a ***** for a couple days. but then i can say i did it right. ive gotten away from using the pad and using gloves.0

Proper barbell squats changed everything for me!0
-
I love squats!
unfortunately i'm just now learning the proper form, so i'm still doing smith machine squats.0 -
Not squatting is bad for the knees = TRUTH! (as long as you use proper form)
As a hiker/backpacker who often carries heavy packs (40+ lbs) for miles and miles, up and down steep terrain, I can tell you squatting has made all the muscles that support my knees way stronger. My knees have never felt better!0 -

It'd be better to do it without weight than with a Smith machine. The bar needs to come forward as you bend down. It simply can't on a Smith.0 -

Ditto on this! The Smith machine is evil! Stay away from it....move to barbell (empty) squats, DB squats, or even bodyweight squats to get the proper form...Smith machine will not teach you proper form.0 -

The stingray thing makes the bar sit in the proper position, but you lose some of the effectiveness with your stabilizer muscles.0 -
I *loathe* squats. Probably because I'm uncoordinated, have tiny feet, a long femur, and a huge butt, so I really struggle with my form. But I'm working on it :P0
-
Darn it. I'm apparently doing it all wrong.0
-
The stingray is usually used by people who have shoulder injuries I believe. I think there's some other reasons, but if the bar is hurting you a lot, you're probably putting the bar in the wrong position. Also, note there are two types of barbell back squats. The low-bar position (sits on the rear delts) and the high-bar position (sits on the traps). There's a lot more to them than just the bar position to, but it's beyond the scope of my "expertise."0

Why squat?
You will develop a rock hard *kitten*, that's why.0 -

Muscle may be heavier than fat. But granite is heavier than muscle. :smokin:0
