New to MFP and Conflicted with the Mirror

Hey all!

I'm new to MFP. In January, I decided I was going to ease back into being healthy by just increasing my gym time. Then a friend asked me to train for a 5k run. I HATE running. Despise. We're enemies. But I said OK. So I started to increase my gym time to accommodate and decided I should track my calories in the process. I found this app almost two weeks ago. My first week I lost 3.6 lbs and I'm nearly trooped through my second full week. I'm shocked I lost any weight. I work night shift and sleep odd hours so I feel like I gain weight even when I'm not trying and feel like its even harder to be healthy... but I LOVE MFP. I find foods listed in here that I never found when I tried Weight Watchers years ago.

I was hoping there's a light at the end of the tunnel, though. The more healthy I find I'm being, the harder I am on myself in the mirror! The more disgusted I get with the mirror! It's hard when I go to the gym, too, and feel like I should be pushing harder but physically can't. I've always been hard on myself but does that get better? When I reach my goals, will I see someone thinner and prettier or will I always see this me? Just wondering what others experiences are... and always looking to make buddies.

Any one else using this in the health care profession? How are you all countering the exhaustion that comes with 12 hour shifts?

Thanks!

Pharmacy tech here, not quiet as exhausting as being a nurse, but pretty busy. I hate running as well, it absolutely sucks. But what I will say is with the mirror is for me personally, it was just me not being where I wanted to be, and looking in the mirror inspired me to keep pushing forward. Just dont let it get to the point of self loathing!

If you don't have too much time to work out, Couch 2 5k (C25K) is a good way to prepare for a 5k. It's a 9 week program that only takes up 30 min, 3 times a week. It really helps ease you into running. http://www.c25k.com/ =)
  • Thanks! I've been doing run5k app... and hope if I can manage, I'll switch to the 10k app sometime after I figure out how to run the 5k! The app pretty much does the same! :)

Good job getting started on running! I'm kinda into it too, though I'm working through P90X now and have taken a break on running. I love having running friends. Friend me if you need support! :)

How do you like the P90x? Is it pretty accessible for home use? I've considered doing something like that but think I'd poop out too quickly! Working on getting a Wii fit soon to supplement with that...

I work nightshift too. Is it hard? at times. as for the running part. I love it! but I don't run. I do more like a slog (slow jog) lol

lol. all about the slog. I've been trying to run after my night shifts... and it definitely turns into a slog then! but it's gotta be better than no slog :)
