Eyesight Improved by Diet? Or.....

I just got back from the eye doctor (I go every year for my annual checkup). First year, I was -1 in both eyes (contacts), the next year, my right eye was increased to -1.25. This time, I was complaining to my doctor that my right eye was fuzzy again. He actually decreased me saying my vision got BETTER. My right eye is now -.75.

While these are marginal, he asked me if I had any bloodwork done as changes eyesight can be linked to diabetes. I've always had my blood sugar checked regularly (my next physical is next Friday) and my levels have either been normal or in the lower range; never high. Have always been ruled out for diabetes (actually, hypoglycemia runs in my family and I've been, at times, diagnosed as pre-hypo years ago...)

After the doctor told me this, I was a little worried. Diabetes is a BIG word to throw at someone during an eye exam. I am overweight, but I improved my health dramatically (track all my foods, changed what stuff I eat, and get lots more physical activity. I'm also down 16lbs). But, could it be possible that my diet actually IMPROVED my eyesight that my blood sugar levels were off prior to my diet change that it affected my eyesight?

So, I can't find anything concrete online regarding true facts, but I'm curious; has anyone else experienced this with the changes in their diet? Please share. This is a weird one!!

A relative had drastic surgery that resulted in weight loss. His vision did improve! He lost somewhere between 30-50 lbs. though.

I had mild improvement at my last eye visit. This after a lifetime of decreasing vision. I run in the -5 range. My eye doctor said small improvements can occur naturally without worry and happen for some people.

Eating a healthy diet is good for your entire body, including your eyes, so keep it up.

If your blood work always shows your sugars as normal, don't fret about diabetes. Just keep being healthy and you'll probably be okay. It runs in my family, so I have it checked often, too.

Congrats on your progress and better vision!

Very interesting so far. And, believe me, I'm keeping it up! Finding out my progress with blood-work next Friday so we'll see what else has possible improved! :-)

I only have anecdotal evidence but my night vision especially improved drastically when I started drinking green smoothies. My husband noticed the same thing in his vision. I only wear reading glasses but he has prescription eyewear. Neither of us has been evaluated by an eye doctor, we just noticed the improvement. I used to hate driving at night (especially if it was raining) but now it isn't a problem.

My eyesight gets worse each year. That included my last eye test which is when I'd been in my healthy lifestyle for six months, but I don't know if that would have been long enough for changes to happen anyway. My next sight test isn't until May 2013, but it would be interesting if things could improve a little, though I doubt it.

I've been short-sighted all my life, and have always had astigmatism in my left eye. Wearing contact lenses gave me astigmatism in my right eye, too. I doubt diet would go anywhere towards fixing any of that.

I noticed it about 1 week since i started in january 17. Much less glaring, can see things clearlier, and have better night vision adaptation.

Diabetes affects eye sight negatively. I've never heard of it having a positive impact.

Exactly. That is why it seems strange!

Interesting....thanks for sharing! Until you said that, I actually just now remembered that my night glare has decreased a LOT. No more large halos around everything...very clear.
