Artificial Sweetners

Here is an interesting article from the New York Times about artificial sweetners....
I always think it is interesting to find out how we are being marketed to:
"Although finding a no-calorie sweetener that tastes exactly like sugar remains the holy grail, the street fight is getting people loyal to the distinct flavors of one fake sugar to jump to another."

I don't use them really, and I find that anything with aspartame has an odd aftertaste that I don't like.

I don't use artificial sweeteners in anything, but I do drink a few cans of diet coke a week. The problem is, I think the aspartame is soooo addictive. It was like quitting smoking... I had to cut back from 2 cans a day, and even now I can't give it up entirely....0

I usually stick with equal and only use one or two in my drinks (sometimes cereal, like corn flakes or cheerios). if you like your drinks sweet, you might as well stick with sugar because sweetener in large amounts don't normally taste good. but I've seen granulated versions of sweetener like altern and my dad swears by it.0

I'm indifferent really. I use sweet n low most of the time, but I use splenda for cooking and stevia for tea0

I don't use any artificial sweeteners in anything anymore. After I took Physiology I learned that insulin is initially released when our tongue senses something sweet, but insulin only counteracts real sugar, not the fake stuff. So after you ingest artificial sugar you have a bunch of insulin in your bloodstream that needs to be counteracted, so you get hungry and eat in order to to do so. So, typically you will end up eating more calories than you would have if you just ate the real deal. I hope that made sense. lol
I used to drink diet Coke all the time and I would always get the shakes and need to eat something afterward, and after I learned that in my class I stopped drinking it and now I have no problems with my blood sugar dropping.0 -
I have been using splenda and I LOVE it. It is great in the Kids homemade cookies and I use it in my coffee. I'm not a pop drinker, I drink alot of water...I find now after using splenda, putting sugar in anything makes it taste so sweet...It is made from Sugar so you can't go wrong..it's natural.0

I just bought and started using the Sun Crystals mentioned in the article. I've only used it so far in my one cup of joe daily.0

I do not agree with artifical sweetners. Your body doesn't have any idea how to process it and it tastes like "YUK"
Natural sugar in moderation is whats best for your body. We are trying to get healthy here, so along with avoiding the processed foods, we need to eliminate the fake ones and fuel our body's with the healthy foods it craves.
My sugar bowl has gone to the same place as my salt shaker...".the back of the cupboard, to only be seen in the shadows." no one really needs either of them. there are enough sugars and salts in the foods we eat that adding extra is unnecessary.
Just my opinion....:noway:0 -
Just in response to the Splenda being natural: http://www.janethull.com/newsletter/0205/truth-about-splenda.php
I think artificial sweeteners are like anything else.... recognize them for what they are, and use in moderation. Like I say, I'm a big diet coke drinker... but I'm trying to limit it. I don't think it's a replacement for sugar at all.0
