Yesterday I bought one and as of right now I have taken 4945 steps burned (based on weight) 398.3 calories and gone a distance of 2.341 miles and this was ALL in my house. This is from 7:15 am to 12:45PM...I'm a busy stay at home mama!
Would you add this to your MFP or not? Just curious, I knew I was busy but I never figured almost 5000 steps before lunch! LOL

Congrats on buying a pedometer! I bought one two years ago and I find it keeps me honest. I think I read somewhere that the average person takes between 2500-3500 steps a day so 5000 by lunch is a great amount! Since joining MFP I've set up step goals for both aerobic and regular steps for January and now February. I find myself taking the long way around the office all the time to add 50-100 steps at a time as they all add up. I'm way ahead of my goal for the month (thanks again to MFP!).
As for adding the calories, that's up to you. I generally only log the calories burned when I go for a walk or play disc golf as those are above and beyond what I'd be doing if were just sitting around the house/office. I figure the regular steps are built into my BMR which MFP uses to calculate how many calories we need to maintain out current weight.0 -
Thanks! I know it's already built in, but I wondered what others do. I don't eat back my excersize calories most of the time because I am just not hungry but it makes me feel like it explain why I am so pooped by the end of the day! LOL!0

I would say it depends on what you said your day is like when you set up your account. For example, I said I was sedetary (sat at a desk most of the day), so any extra stuff I do I would feel like I should count it. If you said you stand up a lot during the day, I would tread lightly.
I want the FitBit Ultra, but I'm debating how I will handle it because I don't want to over calculate.0 -
I agree with the person above. It depends on what you added for your normal activity during the day. I'm a college student so I do spend a good amount of the day sitting and studying but I walk around campus every day as well so I added a middle one. Also, the normal amount of steps is actually between 8000 and 10,000 (but that factors in the average so it includes people who sit at desks during the day as well as people who are moving a good portion of the day) But 5,000 is a great number to have before lunch!0

Thanks guys! You are all on my friends list, so I will post a total tally later tonight, but I know right now I am over 10,000 steps already. I listed my activity level as sedentary....so do you think I should change this? If you have spent any time looking at my diary, you know that I usually have 200-400 calories left for the day and I haven't gone over even once. I am just not very hungry....I mostly just thought it was cool to see and a good explanation as to why I am so dog days tired some days!0

My 2500-3500 estimate was low but I knew that 8000 was too high (I'm having to add a ton of steps to average that a month) so Iooked it up. I also saw another site where it said the average office worker took 3000-5000 steps. 10,000 is what the experts tell you to walk. It takes me walking a little under 5 miles to hit that number.
I found this:
Researchers at the University of Tennessee found that Americans average just 5,117 steps per day, far fewer than people in Australia (9,695), Switzerland (9,650) and Japan (7,168).
The analysis of data from 1,136 U.S. adults also revealed that, on average, American men take more steps per day than women -- 5,340 versus 4,912. In addition, single people in the United States take significantly more steps per day (6,076) than those who are married (4,793) or widowed (3,394).0 -
Well guys it's almost 9pm here in Des Moines, Iowa and I just did the 30 day shred....so being a stay at home BUSY mama with a small daycare I did 12,364 steps, which equates to 5.854 miles which burned 995.9 calories...and I didn't even leave my house...too cold and rainy for the kids....0
