Morning everyone! Ok, so here's the deal. A couple of years ago, I went from almost 300 lbs to 170, then I went to 185/187 a year ago, and I have been in that range for the year. The original weight loss wa due to gastric bypass, and spending 90+ minutes in the gym 6 days a week. For the last year, I have not spent as much time in the gym (averaging out to 3 times a week for an hour) but I added a walk/jog of 3-5 miles one time a week and usually a 2 hour bike ride per week (the gym was getting a bit tought to deal with on a daily basis).

I also got engaged to someone who is not nearly as active as I am and it causes me to let the gym go if he descides not to (this is a very bad sign, and I know it).

I have descided to do a sprint triathlon this year, two actually. I have the biking and swimming down and am working on the 5k. As of yesterday, I can jog 1.25 miles in 15 minutes. I don't care that I am not fast, I just want to do it!

My frustration is that this focus started 3 weeks ago, and I am still at 183.2 lbs. I got sick last weekend and was happy I dropped to 181.6, but bounced right back up to 183.2. Now logically, I can tell you that my belt is one knotch less than before, but I am not noticing a huge difference anywhere else. Pluss, I am eating right with good protein, moderate carbs and low fat, with an average of 1100 kcals a day. I get 95+ oz of water too.

Uuuuugh!!!

Sorry to vent, I am just so frustrated about this!

I feel your pain. I've been really sticking to my diet and exercise but actually gained this week! I am so frustrated. But.....I know I'm gaining muscle and I'm losing inches so this is just a temporary taboo with the scale. I just have to keep telling myself that and most likely that's what's happening with you too. Don't let the scale sabotage the healthy choices you're making. Your overall health is more important than the numbers on the scale.

I can't tell you why you're not losing weight (unless you're gaining muscle), but I can tell you that it's common not to lose weight while training for an event like that. I know because I trained for and ran a marathon last year and didn't lose anything! I even gained a few pounds during the training. I wasn't limiting my calories, that's true, but I was running 25-35 miles a week and needed them. I heard the same things from my training partners, too.

So take heart and enjoy the training! The weight should eventually come off if you're burning more than you're taking in, right?

I know. It's frustrating....:explode: But , like msrn8143 says...you could be losing fat and gaining muscle. Muscle does weigh more. The whole scale thing is way overrated. Yeah it helps to keep an idea of your weight, but you know if you're eating healthy and working out the way you should. Don't let it keep you down. We all hit plateaus :grumble: But living healthier is what counts. Good luck and keep it up. dont give up!!!

Not sure if this is the case but i noticed you wrote you are eating 1100 calories on average. Are you eating too few calories?

I read it is difficult to receive adequate nutrition with less than 1,200 calories and you could be putting your body into starvation mode. Starvation mode lowers your metabolism and makes weight loss more difficult. I read it is suggested that one increase calorie consumption to 1,200 calories per day minimum.

    just thought to mention it.

300 to 185 is amazing. You should be so proud. Positive thoughts. You can do this and you will. The numbers will change. :flowerforyou: :flowerforyou: :flowerforyou: :flowerforyou: :flowerforyou: :flowerforyou:

Thanks all! I know I just need to get my head off the scale and back in the gym 6 days a week.

Peter, to answer your question, I do tend to eat between 1100 and 1200 kcals a day. The only way I lodt the original weight was to eat under 900 kcals a day for a year. I won't do that to myself again. But you made me re-think, so I'll add in a protein powder everyday. That will put me at the 1200 kcals a day for sure. Thanks!

I wish I could find people in my area that wanted to work out with me... I go to Golds, and everyone there is either a muscle builder or there to be picked up! (or at least it seems like it)
  • Hi!
Quite an accomplishment on the weight loss! Be very proud of yourself! I do triathlons as well-it's an unbelievable feeling crossing the finish line-no matter what place you are in! My inspiration was from a 83 year old woman at a race! She looked great and had a spirit about her that was amazing! I want to be her at that age!
My husband does not do what I do-but we enjoy our company immensly! He gives me space and I give him his! When I work out and come home-I'm a happier person so we have a better time together. don't feel that you shouldn't go to the gym because you need to be with him more. I'm sure he respects your time alone and I'm sure you respect his-I think that's why I've had a great marriage for 25 years! Good luck with the training!!!
