protein in the morning

I've been told you should have protein each morning within 30 minutes of waking up. This leads me to a number of questions:
-how much?
-what should I eat?
-is a protein shake a good option?
-what can I eat that's quick and easy with lots of protein?
I'm a mom with a job and a two year old and newborn so being able to consistently do anything within 30 minutes of waking up seems darn near impossible. I'm looking for a simple solution. Any suggestions?

You should strive for a lean protein, complex carb, and healthy fat for most meals but especially the first meal of the day. How much you should eat depends on your size and goals. I would shoot for at least 20-30 grams from a lean source. I prefer egg whites, skim milk, or a whey shake is an option. My only aversion to whey shakes is they don't keep me full for very long so I like to use whey protein shakes more for snacks. Precooking food is always helpful if possible.

We always eat breakfast late because we go out for a "nature" drive each morning. When I first get up I often have a piece of string cheese to hold me until breakfast.

I do a smoothie. Here are a couple of ideas:

Buy a bag of frozen fruit (blueberries, mixed berries, strawberries, peaches):

1 cup milk (skim or 1% for me)
1 scoop vanilla whey protein powder
1/2 cup frozen fruit (this makes it thicker like a shake with no ice)
to taste, one pack of Stevia or Splenda

How about cinnamon? It is supposed to help with insulin resistance and possibly speed the metabolism:

    1 cup milk
1 scoop vanilla whey protein powder
1 teaspoon or to taste cinnamon powder
to taste, a pack of sweetner

I've been having a protein smoothie every morning. It takes me about 3 minutes to make. I throw in a handfull of spinach (for vitamins...you can't taste it AT ALL!), a cup of frozen bluebbries and/or starwberries...no sugar added, protein powder, milk and yogurt. it gives me tons of protein and keeps me satisfied for hours!

Another option is to get muscle milk light in individule servings. Much easier for a busy Mommy of two babies!
