Hey Runners! Split Pace?

Hi all, I was wondering if anyone can explain to me what a split pace is. For example, I ran 6.5 kms early today, and I used the Runkeeper app to track my progress, as I always do. I completed 6.5 km in 36 minutes. My average overall pace was 5:36/km (9:01/mile) ...this was a personal record for me, by the way  ... and I had the settings arranged so that every 5 minutes the nice lady would pipe in and tell me my time, distance, average pace and SPLIT PACE. My split pace was always about 10 seconds higher than my average pace.
What IS the split pace, and do I really need to know it?

The split pace was the pace run since the last split. In this case, the way you had it set up, the split pace was the average pace over the past 5 minutes.0
