Hi ALL,

I have started MFP in Jan, have been watching my diet and doing exercise. My problem now is I am sick, I have asthma, and every time I start something to lose weight, get into a exercise routine, I fall sick because of my asthma and fall back. This has been happening again and again. I am tired and need motivation, I want to work out so bad but I am scared that this may get worse if I go back to gym. At the same time I am worried that if I don't work out then I will put the weight back again. I feel really down right now...:( What do I do??

Are you working with a doctor? I would hope a doctor could help.

But the other consideration is that you don't actually have to "work out" to lose weight. If you eat whole, clean foods and take fewer calories per day than you burn, you will lose weight, even if you burn those calorie following your normal routine without working out.

Also, consider working with a personal trainer (although i know that can be expensive). I have very bad knees and find that working with a personal trainer, it is almost a non-issue as she knows how to keep me working hard without putting my knees at risk. I am actually amazed at what she has me doing.

In any case, i would think the asthma would get to be more manageable the more fit you get.

And finally, i find the people on MFP seem to be pretty fantastic and supportive, interesting and motivating. I just like logging on to read these community pages and i always seem to find ideas and inspiration! Hopefully you find the same thing.

Thank you for your support. I will see if I can speak to a Personal trainer. I talked to my doctor about this and he says I need to be on my maintainance medications and take my inhaler before exercise, which, I am currently doing. I guess having a personal trainer might help me.

If you are on maintenance medication and using your inhaler before exercising, and still having trouble, get with a doctor again and maybe try different medication. Also, I would suggest a pulmonologist (spelling?), not a family doctor. I saw one years ago when some mild pneumonia really messed up my asthma and he was very helpful, and may be more familiar with different medications. He may also be able to work with you on an exercise plan geared to slowly increasing your lung capacity to help the asthma.

I recently changed my maintenance medication due to a formulary change in our insurance, and I was pleasantly surprised that the new one was much more effective for me. So this is worth investigating.

Don't give up, this is a problem that can be solved.

Maybe your doctor will let you do something less vigorous? Maybe yoga?
You'd get a good workout without having to huff and puff over it.

You don't have to work out to lose weight. I am a stay at home mom with no car during the day and no gym membership and no at home equipment and I have lost 11.5 lbs just by watching and changing my diet and staying at or below 1200 calories.

I know that you might feel weak and unmotivated now, but there is a little voice inside of you, telling you that you can do it over and over again.
This voice makes you start a new diet every time. All you have to do is follow it.
Take care of your health, this should be your main priority. It may take a while to get all worked out in the gym, but that doesn't mean, that you cannot do anything!
Start slowly by taking a walk for 10 minutes every day. integrate more fruits and veggies. Learn how to cook healthy and find ways to integrate your new healthy habits into your life.
Losing weight isn't done in a few weeks (unfortunately), but hang in there and you will be rewarded.

    I promise :)

Sounds like you need to sit down with your doctor and come up with a workout plan together. Even if you can only track food here, you should stick around for the motivation. Good luck!
