Is one better than the other - or do you have to do both to maintain a tone figure?

Here's my experience:
I do a mix of cardio and weights. I prefer cardio (it doesn't involve as much thinking - I can zone out while doing it), but have found that adding in a decent amount of strength training is building a body (via building more muscle) that will allow me to burn calories more effeciently (via higher metabolism)
I love to eat - thus I need muscles to help burn those dang calories that I can't seem to pass up. LOL
I easily maintained weight during the holidays, despite throroughly enjoying lots of yummy holiday treats, by continuing cardio and weights diligently.0
