Help... Speeding up my metabolism after wrecking it!

Hi guys,
I have been on and off crash dieting for about 2-3 years now since i was 16..
I lost 1 stone 4 pounds at the beginning of the diet by living on 800 cals a day. And when I need to lose weight i'll do it again. This time I want to do it properly, exercise, 1300 cals a day.. eating healthily. But the weight wont shift. I feel as if I should go back to how I was doing it to see results.
Any advice on speeding up the metabolism? I only want to lose around 10 pounds and its proving difficult doing it the 'right way'

Drink lots of water and eat brekkie as early as possible.0

What do you have your weight loss set to? 1300 calories seems low, unless you are a really tiny girl.0

you cant wreck your metabolism, unless you truely suffered from starvation. meaning being emaciated, no muscle mass, no fat, eating away at your lean tissue (organs).
you cant really speed up your metabolism either...the only real way is through muscle growth..even at that numbers are grossly over estimated on how much energy/calories muscle really uses.
there are two types..your basal metabolism or what your body needs to basically function (as if in a coma as people put it). then there is your activity metabolism..or all the movement you do, from just waking up, eating, walking, exercise, fidgeting etc etc.0 -
I'd love to know the answer to this as I have the same problem. Years of very low calorie intake have ruined my metabolism (i think!) and the weight just isn't shifting on 1200cals per day0

Hi there,
My honest advice to you is.......feed your body, eat clean and work out regularly!
Whatever your daily maintenance cals are (this should be your BMR x your activity level) then reduce that by 20% and that's a good way to lose weight. A lot of people will adopt the 500 cals daily deficit but, it all depends on the individual. A 500 deficit may be nothing to a person who has 3000 cals a day to play with, compared to someone who only has 1800. See where I'm coming from?
Cut the crap out of your diet, aim for 3 meals a day and two snacks, so you're effectively eating 5 times a day. Get at least 2lts of water down you (more when you're working out) and, aim for a colourful "clean" diet with as little processed food as possible.
Eating 800 cals a day only forces your body to slow down, plus...you want to lose body fat not muscle.
PM me if you have any other questions and the best of luck in losing 10lbs!0 -

Do some research on your BMR and TDEE.
The setting of 1200 given my MFP was too low for me. After some great advice from MFP friends I increased it to between my BMR and TDEE and the weight started coming off again.

I'm about the same size as you and wanted to lose a similar weight. I've found it really slow to start, despite following the cals given and accepting them as realistic. It took me about 3 weeks to even see any loss begin - I consoled myself that I was building muscle as I stopped running as much and replaced runs with lifting weights. I saw inch changes long before I saw weight changes.
My weight loss is erratic, a couple of weeks no loss, then a pound or a half pound, a couple more with nothing, then bizarrely this morning I appear to have lost 2.5 (I think largely cos of being ill, so I expect to regain most of that). I think the closer you are to your goal, the harder it is to shift those last wee bits, so maybe focus on the fitness and toning - exercise will sure give you an appetite which you should feed.
I don't agree with those who prefer to calorie load with a large early breakfast, for me that just makes me ill. I prefer to eat little and often across the day to keep me steady & not put too much pressure on my stomach (cos it hates me, lol).
It might take a few weeks of messing about with your routine to find what works, but persevere and I'm sure you'll find the healthy permanent way that works for you - and then it'll stay off, so no more crash diets needed!0 -
Thanks everyone.
Rozlyn - should i maybe diet (800 cals) to get to 9 stone then just run and weight lift from there? As i was only 8 stone 10 about 3 months ago.0 -

this gives me a daily calorie of 1135???? less than the 1200?
bmr 1290*1.2 = (-20%)0 -

Hi there, what's your current weight? What are you wanting to get down to?
Read this....
http://www.jillianmichaels.com/fitness-and-diet-tips/determining-your-AMR
They usually say 10-20% reduction in daily calories, after you've calculated your TDEE is a better way to lose weight than to just subtract 500 cals from your daily allowance.
I personally would never eat less than my BMR...this is what you need to function at bare minimum, as if you were sleeping in bed all day long.
I hope that's helped?!0 -
Thanks
4ft 10 and current weight 164lbs, office job?
will read thread many thanks, it seems to be harder when you are small as BMR is so low anyway, though sure i am as just as hungry as 5ft 10 person LOL0 -
I promise i was the same and have upped my cals to 1200 and the weight has dropped off. I put on spme water weight at first due to my body being in shock at my actually feeding it hehe, but now i feel much better and stronger with my workouts. Some days i go over my deficit but i know its ok - im very active so i know im under and it just fuels mh workouts more. Eating more nuts helped me as they are in small amounts but calorie dense0
