sodium/drinking water

Hello All,

I am just a little confused about sodium and what it does. I have been going over on my sodium levels I noticed, but staying within calories. I feel like I eat pretty healthy. A lot of fresh/organic foods. But anyways I saw quite a bit of posts about if you go over on sodium one day the best way to flush it is to drink a lot of water. I'm just confused by this because if the sodium makes you retain more water then why would you drink more water? Any advice would be great! Thank you!

while my logic suggests a good answer, I don't know the science, so I too would like to know
