weights and elbow pain

I am trying to increase the weight that I am lifting, and I have been happy with how my arms and shoulders have been changing. However, I am starting to get some significant elbow pain. Has that happened to any of you? Do you have any recommendations? Part of my issue is that I have an autoimmune rheumatoid disease that effects my muscles tendons and ligaments causing them to harden and tighten. About a year ago I had my elbow x-rayed by the orthopedic surgeon and he said he didn't see anything, so there was nothing he could do to help...
