I have used it for over a year with some success in treating chronic insomnia. It helps, though you may have to play with dosage to get it right. :)

Yep- a good place to start. If you find it's too much and you feel groggy in the morning, they have 1.5 and 2.5 mg, plus liquid sublinguals for personalized dosing. I think you can build up a tolerance though, so keep that in mind. I used to be good on 3mg, but now have a 5mg time release. :/

    I take it.

I had a doctor tell me, "Why are you taking that? It's not FDA approved." The doctor didn't know my medical problems. I used to take a prescription sleep drug that wasn't meant for long-term use. It was prescribed for fibromyalgia.

I asked my rheumatologist about melatonin and he said, "Sure! Try it!"

I also have sleep apnea, which was diagnosed after I talked to the rheumatologist. Sleep doc is OK with melatonin as long as I'm not taking any other sleep meds that work the same way. I guess she's concerned about over-sedation.

If anyone has problems with sleep, I usually tell them to make sure to see a sleep doctor because mine helped me so much. I can tell you who I saw if you private message me. She's in Bloomfield at West Penn Hospital. Anyhow, apparently 80% of people with sleep apnea are undiagnosed. You don't have to snore or be overweight to have sleep apnea. And you could be waking up 100's of times a night without knowing it! It's the weirdest thing, but it's not like you're fully awake... so you don't remember it. That's what I learned about myself, and I'm feeling a lot better now that I'm getting better sleep.

Okay, I rambled on, but this is something near and dear to me and it helped me tremendously so I hope other people who felt like I used to can get the help they need.
  • Melatonin is not something I take all the time because it gives me weird dreams. The dreams are so random and sporadic. Has anyone else had these kinds of symptoms? If I do need to take something to sleep it's because I need to stay asleep. I work nights so it is sometimes kind of hard to get a "good nights' sleep." I try to mix it up with a PM or something.

Had VIVID dreams with the apnea. Sometimes would get little snippets of a conversation that was part of a dream that was so... well, realistic... lifelike... that I couldn't tell it from reality.

I once woke up thinking that I had a meeting with my boss and co-worker and that I was told to do something. So, the next day I did it, and my boss got a little upset. My co-worker had to convince me that meeting hadn't happened. It was something really stupid and probably procedural, not anything outrageous.

One night recently when my sleep was screwed up from a headcold, I dreamed that someone said they weren't going to be in the office the next day. That was it... the full extent of the dream. When the girl walked in, I realized it was a dream.

It wasn't always like that, sometimes it was just really vivid dreams that I knew were dreams when I woke.

My husband and son both have sleep disorders and take it. I didn't start my son on it until he was 12 or 13, when I finally gave up on finding the right bedtime routine or for his brain to mature enough to get him to go to sleep when he needed to. It just about brought me to tears to hear him say "Mom, I'm sleepy," for the first time in 12 years.

My daugther and I took it for awhile and it worked great. Then we started to build a resistance to it. The doctor said it can actually make you have trouble sleeping in the long run if you use it too often for too many months.

I've been using 3 mg of Melatonin nightly for over two years. I get a good, restful nights sleep with no problems. My son-in-law also takes it but he uses the 5 mg Melatonin.

Remember that your body's natural melatonin production decreases as you get older. I have heard of people going off of melatonin for a period of time in order to re-sensitize themselves, rather than increasing dosage.
