The "Your getting to skinny" remark

i would smile and say "well it's better than being too fat" and walk away.
i hate when guys say it... i dont' care if they want me to be bigger, it's not their choice!0 -
I have had this as well - have now reached my goal but the last bit was really hard because all the encouragment went and all I got was 'but you are so skinny now why bother!'.
Let it wash over you - if you are happy in your own skin and healthy that is all that matters. My favourite retort if pushed too hard by people is 'well my BMI is 24 and it would have to below 18 to be skinny (unhealthy) so I think I have a way to go before you can refer to me as skinny!'.
I am a happy UK size 12 (US size8) I am 5'6" and weigh 149lbs my new goal is to maintain the new me and enjoy my new clothes!0 -
Once I got down to my goal weight one of my close friends said that I was boardering one "too skinny" for a couple of weeks. Now that she is used to the new me she doesn't make any comments and I haven't gotten any other comments. (aside from my husband saying, "i was looking at some old pics and you were hot when you were chunky....but you're hot now too so that's good ) I think they probably just need to get used to the new you
Generally I just say "well I feel good, and I like the way my clothes fit" if they seem genuinely concerned I thank them for their concern and tell them I don't plan to lose anymore weight but it's hard to run a marathon with 25 extra pounds0 -
Just say, " no worries, I plan on putting some back on in muscle." If they are commenting like that, they wouldn't now the difference anyway.:ohwell:0

I ALWAYS take "too skinny" as a complement, because I know I can never actually become "too skinny", due to my unconditional love of chocolate!0
-
Oh you are so right! I'm only halfway to my target and when I say that I get "There'll be nothing left of you!". Well clearly there will, cause it'll still be half a stone heavier than when I met my hubby.
As long as you are still within the healthy BMI range and feel healthy you are fine!

"And you're getting a bit too judgemental."
 That's brilliant.
I'd take it as a compliment. My father in law told me last week that I didn't want to lose any more weight (really? So it's up to you what I do with my body?). This from a man who is *ahem*, a little bit round, has diabetes and who accuretly guessed my weight - in front of people - when I first met him (I was more than 20 lbs heavier then).
I just joke that I'll try and quit throwing up after meals and leave off the cocaine soon0 -
I get this ALL the time. I just tell them I am happy where I'm at and I worked HARD to get here. I do not share with them that I would like to lose another 10lbs. They can't SEE those 10lbs with my clothes on and I sure as heck am not stripping down just to justify myself.
Smile, nod, say thank you...then walk away knowing that you are strong, amazing and you are working hard to lead a healthy lifestyle0 -
i agree with others about jealousy too. i think sometimes other women who don't want to put in the effort get mad when those of us who do put in the effort start to see results.0

All the family thought they could make those comments after my husband lost 23kgs. His Mum said to me I should tell him to stop dieting and losing weight as he's lost enough. I said he isn't on any diet, has never set out to lose weight, he started a fitness program to do just that, get fit. Its a lifestyle change. The changes we have made are for life. A 'diet' is something you start and then stop when you reach a goal. After you stop, it usually all comes back on. So we started a healthy lifestyle change and its done wonders for energy levels, muscle definition, feel good feeling as well as the bonus of the kgs coming off.
Most people will say it out of jealousy.
Now people in the family are starting to ask, 'what are you doing now?', 'what diet are you on?'. It is so good to say, no diet at all.
Just be proud of what you have achieved. Let them know the same thing, you aren't dieting at all, its just a lifestyle change that maybe they should consider taking up and you're there to help them if they want.
Good on you for achieving what you have so far. It truly does take eating right and getting moving more regularly. cheers.0 -
"You know, maybe you're right, but we *have* been spending an awful lot of time discussing my body and your opinions of it. Why don't we judge yours for a little while?"0
-
I know exactly what you mean. The first time I lost 30lbs, I couldn't help but trumpet my success on social media but all i got back was comments like "What! You should stop. You're going to get an eating disorder." Since I am 5"4 and just under 200lbs I thought this was pretty premature and hurtful. So now I say nothing and turn my back on the haters.0

My mom just talked to me about this the other day. I guess she went to my gram's house and some of her sisters were down there and they told her "I don't know why Ashley thinks she needs to lose anymore weight, shes already skinny enough"
I didn't know what to say! First off I was wondering how I was even brought up, I wasn't there....I haven't seen half of them in several months. I have a few on facebook...but I don't post about weight loss or anything, I just post about exercise. Before I had my son I was 127lbs and I'm 139 right now, I don't remember getting to many comments before, and I def didn't get any "to skinny" comments when I was 140ish pounds before I got pregnant with my daughter back in 2005. So 1lb makes me "to skinny" ha.0 -
My mom told me not to lose any more weight ,which I don't plan to do anyway but I was a little offended by that.0

WOW! You guys are awesome! I loved so many responses, I wanted to quote them all!
I like to tell people I'm trying to get my BMI or body fat percentage into a certain range, but I have gotten the "Men must have made up those numbers" response more than once so I think for now, I will just smile and nod.
Despite being a size 8 (which could very well be vanity sizing, and that's an entirely different thread) I still have a body fat percentage of 29%. I'm aiming for 22-25%. I've gained 4lbs of muscle and hope to continue to lose the fat and gain muscle. I know I will appear "thinner" because of this.
I did hear from one girl who told me I was too skinny and she said she was gaining weight and it was pissing her off. She's still very small in my eyes, but now I understand the comment.
To me, the "your to skinny" remark hurts just as bad as the "your to fat remark" which I have gotten also. I work hard (at work and home), eat right, and workout at the gym. I'm doing this for health as well as self esteem. I found out I was gluten intolerant and once I eliminated the gluten, the weight started to fall off and my workout results started to show (I've been working out for 10 years, but was gaining weight and couldn't figure out why.)
Okay, I'm done ranting! I don't even know if my post makes any sense! This is just such an awesome sight! I'm so glad I delete my Facebook account for this!

*eyes opened* I wondered about the gluten intolerance thing as I've been having that same problem. Will try that.
I had the "you're too skinny" and "you don't need to lose any more weight" a couple of years ago when I lost 3stone (around 40lbs) in 4 months as I was ill (doctor never found out what it was) and I agreed I was getting skinny - a slip of a thing at 12 stone! lol - but I couldn't help it as it wasn't me that was losing the weight on purpose. That pissed me off more than anything as people knew I wasn't well but they still made the comments. I mean, narrow-minded much?
Sadly since then - while I seem to be feeling better, yay! - I've put back on the weight I lost and more, boo! My MFP loss was 2lbs last week but I put some on again and now I've lost 1lb I added it to MFP and it still shows 0lbs lost because it's still above the weight I started at. Feeling deflated, not gonna lie, but I'll get there.0
