getting discouraged

Hi all,

I'm getting discouraged. I lost about 18 pounds since starting to track it, but probably a little over 20 since I started eating better and exercising. Here's the thing, I'm still doing that, but I've GAINED 4 pounds in the last 2 weeks. Emotionally, it is killing me.

Here's some detail/history. I'm Type 2 diabetes and my last A1c (December 2011) was high. Along with that labwork, my cholesterol, BP and weight were up. My doc tells me that at my age (turning 43 in April), I'm getting to the point that I either need to do something, or she'll need to start adding medications.

OK, so at first, I just cut out the crap I knew I shouldn't be eating anyway... sugar and a little later junk food. Then started reducing the bad carbs and switching to whole grains. I also started exercising. 20 minutes of cardio at first and building up.

I got to the point were I was eating under 1500 calories per day and exercising 45 - 60 minutes of cardio (using HRM to ensure in the cardio range). I try to exercise every day, but for sure I've been going 5 - 6 times per week. I just recently started incorporating weights (2 x so far). On weight lifting days, I do less cardio, so far 30 minutes.

After two weeks of 1500 calories, I started getting symptoms of low blood sugar. My measured blood sugar wasn't in the true low blood sugar range (below 70), but in the 80's. This can happen when blood sugar drops too quickly. So, I went up to 1800 calories a day and made sure I was eating about 1 hour before and immediately after exercising. That has pretty much resolved the low blood sugar symptoms.

But, since then, I've also gained 4 pounds. Now, based on the calculators on this site, I should still be set for losing 1 lb a week. I know I could be gaining muscle, but that seems like too much too fast to really be it.

Any thoughts or ideas?
