I've just signed up to Parkrun and would love some new friends to support me and give advice etc. I'm in Durham so anyone who does Parkrun there (it's a long shot, I know!) would be great to meet!

Currently I run between 4 and 5k about 3-4 times a week on a treadmill, but have never attempted it outside so I'm a little nervous.

Please feel free to add me etc.

Ditto! I'm ok by myself but in a big group with people who will inevitably be better than me i'm slightly scared.

    Good luck!!

If you know roughly how long it takes on a tradmill , you can look at the latest results to see roughly what position you will finish

I walked the course last sunday, 5K is a lot longer than you think compared to a treadmill :noway:

This is partly why i'm worried. I guess the worst that can happen is I finish last and feel a bit embarassed, but after that at least I can only improve!

If you can run 5K on a tredamill i don't think you'll come last.

From what i've seen, some people do a combination of run/walk

Ok that's good! I will most definitely be taking walk breaks.

I'm not in your area, but we have had them where I live for over a year, such good fun! Good luck!

On the Parkruns they usually have some runners who deliberately finish last as a reassurance for those slower runners who are embarrassed at the thought of being last.
Parkruns are very friendly and you will be cheered on by the organisers no matter how slowly you are going.

I have done these off and on for nearly a year in Belfast. Really great opportunity for total beginners to do a timed 5k. parkrun website/results etc is very slick.

It will be harder than the treadmill so pace yourself accordingly - maybe add 5%-10% depending on how hilly the course it.

I haven't met anyone yet who doesn't love the parkrun. You will love it.

well? how did the parkrun go?
  • You will love it. I started a couple of months ago (The Bedford Park Run) and have completed it 5 times. I am more than 2 minutes better than my original time. Running with others just pulls you along and is much more enjoyable.

    Good luck to you

Good luck with it. I did it at NewFarm but could only walk, so of course I was last. But I had a friend with me who is a regular and she actually let me be 2nd last! Next time I do it my runner friends said they would come back and meet me so I'm not on my own. Hopefully you can get someone to do that for you too. However you may surprise yourself and not be last at all!

I used to love my Park Runs! I did 5 or 6 in Barnsley before christmas. But training for my 10K means I need my Saturday mornings for long runs, but ill be back. Its a fantastic atmosphere, really social and welcoming . Get on it :)

I've signed up for the parkrun (my local is Glasgow) but I haven't done one yet. Friday is my rest day so I'm not good at getting up early on a Saturday!

I'm sure I'll get around to it eventually!
