My Personal trainer has suggested periodisation in my training whereby i work at high intensity one week and low intensity the following week. Any thoughts on this type of training pattern?

I always train using periodization when I am training for something in particular. In my case, I run.

What I do is a 3 week on, 1 week off cycle. The intensity of the run increases during the week and from the first week to the third week (so the third week is the hardest, with the longest long run). Then during the 4th week I cut back the intensity of my shorter runs and do not do any speed work and my long run is about half of what it was the previous week. My focused training cycles are usually 18-24 weeks, with a two week break (or easy for two weeks) in between events. I'm on the older side and find that as I age I need more rest. I typically run 5x a week, cross train one day, and complete rest the other day. It certainly works for me!
