Zumba - tell me about it?

There is a Zumba class at my gym and I am kind of interested in checking it out... I can not dance LOL! Would I feel stupid trying this? Also, I sprained my ankle in November as well as fracturing my heel (stress fracture) so my doc told me in January "No High Impact" for another 2 months. My ankle feels ok now, but I tried 30 day shred on 1/16 and it KILLED my ankle and I have been to scared to go back to 30DS after that 1 day. I am worried Zumba might do the same thing to me?

to answer your first question, zumba will NOT make you feel stupid! People of all ages and dancing abilities take zumba. I'm by no means a good dancer or coordinated at all, but zumba is just about having fun and letting loose.

I'd be worried about your ankle, though. Zumba is heavy on footwork, and depending on the class, can have jumping and other high impact movements.

Maybe take a water aerobics class for some low-impact exercise until your ankle is healed, and then give zumba and try.

The only other class I can do at my gym is Spinning... They do have other classes but most are during the week and I just can not get there in time and even if I could it would take time away from seeing my boys in the evening before they go to bed :frown: I don't get home from work until a little past 7pm and they go to sleep around 9:30...

I would not do Zumba until you're cleared for high impact. There is a lot of twisting and jumping that might be hard on your ankle and knee.

When you're cleared, give it a try. Even if you can't dance (I can't!), it's still fun :)

I agree with this. take care of your ankle before trying any high impact exercise. but when you DO heal - zumba is awesome!

I adore Zumba. Very fun! But like PP said, there are a lot of steps and footwork involved. I screwed my knee all up in high school and it still gives me trouble on occasion, but I still go. It beats a treadmill for an hour. I feel very dorky sometimes, just because I don't know all the steps yet. And we do this wobble thing, lots of hips. I suck at those, but once you realize no one is watching you, you just have fun with it. And it's a great workout.

And if you decide to go and it's a little too hard on that ankle, just march and do the arms. No one will judge you. Just try to keep moving. That's all that matters.
