Heavy Lifting Question

I see alot of people posting about doing Heavy Lifting and how it has really helped them. Here is my stupid question:
What is Heavy Lifting exactly?
What do you do?
How do you do it?
Various exercises?
Any other good info you would like to share.
Currently I do mostly aerobic activity but have recently started what I guess could be called strength training primarily using my own body as resistance.
Thanks in advance for the info.

Typically, heavy is as heavy as you can lift, in good form, for 6-8 reps (but reps vary depending on the program you follow).
The book "The New Rules of Lifting for Women" is very commonly recommended to start. That is how I got started.
Here is a recent topic you might want to check out: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/499320-women-lifters
And a couple of groups on here:

Also check out websites like Bodybuilding.com and a lot of new lifters like NerdFitness.com (though I haven't spent much time on the site).0
