My husband is deployed to Korea and has informed me today that he wants me to come visit In the summer. I lost my birth certificate and don't have a passport yet and am afraid that I don't have enough time to get both and catch a plane by may 11th. Does any one have any idea how long it would take to get the certificate and passport on base? My husbands NCOs are clueless (which is sad) and aren't interested in finding an answer for us :/

  • As far as I know you can't get your BC from post. You have to go through the state and order a replacement with an "official" stamp, which you have to have to apply for your passport. But, you can always have your passport expedited to get it faster.
  • You need to contact the municipality where you were born - it's definitely a benefit if you were born in a small little town/county. You can generally call them directly, they can email you the documents to fill out, you send them back with the appropriate identification and payment and they'll get one mailed to you within a few days. Just look up clerk of the courts for the county you were born in.

If you use one of those website services that take care of all states, you generally pay additional fees to them, then another expedited fee if you want it sooner rather than later.

I've used both services for extra copies of my kids birth certificates and honestly if you order this week, you'll have them in hand long before may.

Now for the passport I don't have a clue how long that would take to get.

Our local county government website has a place for a birth certificate request. Make the request, send the required information/pay the fee and in a couple of weeks the certificate is in the mailbox.

I'm not sure on passport info.

You have enough time to get both done. Like was said birth certificate takes like a week from request to it being in your house. I just got a passport and it took 2 weeks from applying to the passport being in my house. You have plenty of time.

You should have time to do both but you will need to rush it, which can be expensive. I did my passport at the post office. I believe the on base passports are only the DOD no fee passports but you have to be accompanying your spouse on offical orders to get one of those. You can get the passport forms online here: http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html

Thanks everyone. I sent the paperwork an payment for my birth certificate last week but was hoping if I could go on base and get it faster, then I would jut end up with 2 copies and be able to apply for my passport tomorrow. I'll go on base and see if it can be done. If not, at least I know. I have nothing to lose!

As far as I know, the passport can be expedited to get to you between 4 and 6 weeks. I hope it all works out for you and you get to see your man!
