i know Swimming is one of the best all round exercise's going, thats why i started doing it, but my question is..
is an hour swimming Breaststroke non stop really worth the 767 calories this site says it is?

  • It really does depend on how much you are pushing it. I do find for the relaxing breaststroke pace that most people swim at, the calorie estimation on here is way out - I think that this is at race pace (i.e. flat out). I personally use the front crawl rather than breaststroke calcs whenever I log swimming because that allows you to adapt to how much effort you're putting in. A much more accurate way of logging IMO. The only close to accurate measure you'll get though is to wear a HRM.

I did 25 min at a "race pace" this morning and it was good for over 500.

It depends on how hard you're going. If you were really pushing it, for an hour I could see that number being correct. Swimming is one of those activities that you don't feel that tired when you get done, but a few hours later you start to notice. Swimming exhausted is my favorite type of exhausted.

i push myself as hard as i can for as long as i can, which i wouldn't call a race pace but hey i can keep up with a lot of the crawlers, i've never been able to do front crawl myself (couldn't get the hang of the breathing) and even after lessons there was no improvement so have concentrated on Breast stroke.
i can't , even if i ate cream cakes , manage to eat back those kind of calories, which is what i want when trying to lose weight, but my concern is for when i start to maintain (which isn't far off) , that i'm going to carry on losing weight if the estimates are correct.
Guess i'll have to play it by ear when i get there?
    cheers for the answers.
