STARVING after a work-out

edited November 2024 in Fitness and Exercise
Often times, on any 'normal' day I am "shaky" by 10:00 am. I just started participating in myfitnesspal (off and on for awhile, but I am committed to losing about 17 pounds) and I know my eating habits need adjustments. I started workout and and I notice that after a workout I am REALLY hungry and I start to get 'shaky' again. It seems contradictory to eat after working out- should I be drinking more water? Any suggestions?

Thank you!

You probably need to eat more. If you are shaky you probably aren't eating enough carbs.

It's absolutely fine to eat after a workout. Your body needs replenishment after exertion. People often try to include simple carbs or sugary fruit for quick energy replenishment and a good amount of fast absorbing protein, like a protein shake, to help with muscle recovery. There is lot of advice on this subject if you look for it.

Naturally, it very much is a case of working out what is right for you and what kind of workouts you do.

If you're starving, you need to eat. After a workout you need to give your muscles nutrients they need to repair themselves, if not you're just opening yourself up for injury an muscle loss rather than fat loss. Go to GNC and ask what they recommend. Also, if you are shakey you need to eat more.- a good balanced diet. I know it seems counter productive to eat more in order to lose weight but if you're exercising that is precisly what you need to do. It's hard, I know - REALLY! LOL As long as you're within your calorie goal and your eating healthy you will be okay and you will lose weight.

uhhh..don't go to GNC unless you want to buy a lot of over priced stuff. Do some research then buy food at a grocery store. For supplements like protein powder, search online for the best prices.

I eat before workout usually cheerios with either strawberries or blackberries. Not at all hungry after for about 2 hours. Than I have all natural turkey breast rolled in a piece of Jarlsburg lite swiss cheese 2 of these. Boy it does the trick.

sounds like a sugar crash, your diet is proberly wrong,,,,, try having a protein shake with a scoop of carbs straight after training, your body will start to absorb it immediately and will curb the hunger, as for the shakes i can only suggest looking at other members daily logs and see were you can improve your food intake

I would suggest having more protein for breakfast and maybe have a bigger breakfast too. I used to eat milk and cereal for breakfast and wonder why I was shaky, tired and hungry 2 hours later. Then I figured out if I eat a bit more and make sure there's more protein I wouldn't get that feeling.

I also workout mid-morning and before that, I usually have either either a breakfast sandwich (2 eggs, 1 slice cheese on multi grain sandwich thin) or Kashi oatmeal w/ protein follwed by at least half a protein bar before I hit the gym. The only times I get shaky now is if I'm doing an especially difficult workout!

    Hope that helps!

Thanks for all the suggestions - with kids it's hard finding time to work out during the day. I work full time too so the only time I get to work out is from 8:30pm to 9:30pm.

I am starving by the time I am done with my work out too. I drink a premier nutrition chocolate shake 160 calories, 30 g protein that I get at Costco. Its according to how intense my work out is, but this generally will tide me over an hour or two until I eat lunch, I typically work out mid morning.
